I have it pretty lucky. A friend of mine is willing to let me live with him while I study Japanese language for 2 years. After the 2 years I want to know how slim my chances of finding work. The big problem is not having a degree. I do how ever have over 10+ years programming pascal. Computer hardware. I have a little bit of c++. I did take a course in windows 2000 desktop one of the tech schools.
I'm not even sure if i'll be going depends wether or not the trust fund I have will put up around 12 grand which seems to be around the going rate for full time japanese language school for 2 years. I'm currently 35 years old, so rather not wait any longer to do things. I'll be staying near Kanazawa city in the suberbs.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Im interested in doing a tech job in japan and from what i heard about the place they do need the people. Programming especially. So you could be in luck! After 2 years of study (in japan?) you should have japanese good enough to get out and look for a job. At worst you could teach english to support yourself till the job you want comes around.
To get a work visa in japan tho you need one of three things. A degree (you and me both dont have one, dang), 10+ years work experience (in only 18, i think you might have me here) or 3+ years experience in the area you wish to work in (this one I have if i want to do be a systems technician. Worked for Mitsubishi for a while which would look noice (aussie slang for nice) on my resume). The other option is a working holiday which is not available to americans. :(

You gotta work for 10 years to be able to get a work visa? o_O

Or study for 3-4 years in a university. No point giving a work visa to an uneducated/untrained person, they want skilled workers.

It's very difficult to get a work visa without a degree. But if you happen to fall in love with a Japanese and get married in those two years, you can work in Japan no problem. :)
