I randomly (and accidentally) came across this in a J-E dictionary:
ポマト
pomato; cross of a tomato and a potato
I thought... "There's no way that's real! Is it...?" And then I found this in Google Images: http://www.town.yoshinaga.okayama.jp/mikuni/tanken/pomato.JPG
I heard about people hybriding different kinds of citrus fruits, but this seems like it should be impossible! Does anyone know anymore about this? I can't find that much information about it...
(Man, I'm such a dork, being this excited. You shoulda seen me when I heard such a thing as ligers and tigons existed.)

... or is it the other way round ???
Whatever, Scientist are sticking their nose into it ! Tomorrow we'll have Cucumbange (orange and cucumber), Beananas ( banana and beans), and my prefered, of course, which I'm wainting for eagerly is the Caulielon.. . which will taste like nothing else, excepted cauliflower and melon ! If they make ice cream out of it, I'll buy some !.
Here is some extract of a scientific journal, and it's no joke whatsoever.
'Pomato' helps potato to fight cold
Tomato genes may be able to make potatoes more resistant to frost. Despite the fact that introducing pieces of tomato chromosome is proving more difficult than expected, PhD candidate Caldere believes that, if tomato and potato cells can be fused, the way will be open fot transferring genetic information from tomatoes to potatoes.
Implanting tomato chromosomes in a potato is more complicated than scientists originally thought it would be. This is one of the conclusions of Spanish PhD student Fracesc Garriga Caldere, who graduates Wednesday March 18. Garriga's supervisor is Professor Evert Jacobsen.
As long ago as 1978 researchers managed to combine tomato and potato cells, producing a 'pomato' which was capable of growing. However, it was not until 1994 that researchers were able to breed from the hybrid by crossing it with an ordinary potato.

well, TIGRONS or TIGLONS all ready exist, and this is real ! it is the hybrid mixt of a tiger male and an lion female (better have a female here...). The problem is that they are sterile and therefore cannot reproduce.

Seems like they're "playing God" but it's food, so it's more innocent.
They should make strawnana / bananawberry.
hello to you Johnathan
well, strawnanas allready exist if you choose it while eating ice-cream..
Seems like they're "playing God" but it's food, so it's more innocent.
no it's not so innocent. and it's not the first time that they are playing god.. it probably will degenerate into "impossible things to eat" very soon. And what are they telling you ? The reply is simple . "We are trying to find a way to feed future generations because there will not be enough natural ressources in the future of". That of course will mean wars for land, for air, for water.
Do you know that if, today, the chinese population had the same standards of life than the americans (but they are a bad polluting example), the entire ressources of earth would be necessary jst for them. Ther would be nothing left for the others.
I love China, I love and deeply respect chinese people .
So, let's find some new food concept, but without GMO.
