I think the Japanese slang thread is getting a little long.

My 'fun word' of the day is ママチャリ

If nobody knows what it is I'll post its definition tomorrow (or so).

It's certainly a bicycle - but I don't think the 'sports' bit fits. :relief:

It's sound so strong and powerful! but it means "ママチャリ" in Nagoya region. :p

Well it's easy to see what the マシーン bit is - but where does ケッタ come from :?

Well it's easy to see what the マシーン bit is - but where does ケッタ come from :?

"ケッタ" is derived from "けったくる". It means "蹴(け)る" in standard Japanese. Why "蹴る"? Because we pump the pedals of a bicycle. In Nagoya, people use "蹴る" instead of "pump".

ペダルを蹴る機械 --> ペダルを蹴ったくるマシーン --> ケッタマシーン :D

But in standard Japanese, "pump the pedals of a bicycle" is 「自転車のペダルを漕ぐ」 but not 「自転車のペダルを蹴る」 . :relief:

Yeah, there were a number of ketta machine web sites related to bicycles -- but I was thinking of kick more than pump. :p Isn't there also a ketta machine band or music group?
