こにちわ!

I'm picking up my 日本語 after not practicing it or using it or studying it at all for over four years. Its been about a month or two since I've restarted my learning, but its been going incredibly well.

I noticed a couple class mates in my English class having a little discussion in Japanese and I was drawn to what they were saying. I understood bits and pieces! It was enough to spark my interest again and here I am!

Since then I've been getting ahold of every textbook, dictionary, phrase dictionary, and all sorts of Japanese music that I could get ahold of. I've been immersing myself in the culture as much as possible.

Over the course of the past months I've grown closer with one of the students in my class. Her name is つきたりなつみ。I took her to meet with the Japanese instructor that I had in high school so she could see how Japanese is taught in America. I thought that would be something interesting for her to see, afterall I'd be interested in visiting a English class in Japan. Oh, なつみ is going back to Japan after being in America for two years soon. I'm incredibly astounded to the quality and breadth of her understanding of English after being here for only two years! Simply amazing. She was in the same English class as me afterall (no I'm not in ESL or some lower english class :).

Also, I met a woman who is 69. She moved to America when she was 19 and has lived here ever since. Kind of unfortunate though, her Japanese is very very difficult to understand and she never speaks it with anyone so she may be out of practice. Whats really sad is that her English isn't very good either. Oh well, she was definitely interesting to talk about Japanese culture from almost 70 years ago.

One of the bigger reasons I've decided to take on Japanese again (besides the interest in the culture and the interesting skill of another language) is that it would be an incredibly good skill to have along with a major in Computer Science. I figure, with a Computer Science major and a Japanese minor (certificate rather, its more units than a minor but is easier to call it a minor) I'd have a really healthy resume to throw at an employeer.

I've been working on learning kanji and sentence structure though emails with なつみ. I think this more or less will help me be really really prepared for the college Japanese course that I'm taking this Fall. Its been awhile, so anything will help.

Anyways, thats my story with learning Japanese. And this is my introduction post, well I hope it was in the right section at least! :)

Heh, yes... shows exactly how poor my 日本語 skills are. But I would have caught the は after 私 now and こにちは as well. :)
