Being an exchange student to Japan...

Hi all~
I'm trying to get money so I can be an exchange student to Japan for one semester next year. I don't know what I can do to raise money though... I've started selling things I don't need on ebay and having bake sales with help from my friends, but is there any other way that I could raise more than just a few hundred dollars? I need to get about half the money for my trip before my parents will consider paying for the rest of it..and the trip will cost about $12,000... any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated!~ Thanks! ^_^

seeing if you school guidence councilor has access to any type of scholarships or organizations who might finance such a trip. You might try to find a "Japan-American Society" in your area; they may be able to help? Outfits
like the LIONS, ELKS, Masons, and other similer organizations sometimes will donate to such causes, might be worth talking to them? GOOD LUCK, almost everyone on this Forum wants to go to Japan also!

I agree, go get a job, or a part-timer at least. $6000 will take sometime to get, even for a part-timer. When do you plan to have the money by?
Also try for financial aid (in addition to scholarships) if the program allows for it.

I reccomend writing an extremely thorough letter pn exchange and the benifits of it and giving it to everyone you know! Then, at the end of the letter, explain your financial problem. You will be surprised, many ppl will want to help! If you look on exchange organization sites, there are A LOT of tips and ideas as how to raise money!

How much money do you have right now? Since even if you get a part time job you won't make 6,000$ in a year.

btw this 12,000$ what currency is this? Either way this seems like a total rip off. With my exchange agency the only thing I need to pay is my school uniform, books and transportation to school. This is about 2,000$ Canadian the only way I see this trip costing near 12,000$ is if your family doesn't accept a Japanese student in exchange.

do youi have any specific skills? For eg if you can play the piano, you could teach it to beginners or something. There's a lot of money in that.

If you're going through your university, then I'd bet the reason you're paying so much is because of tuition. That's how they get you. Of course, if this is the route you're taking, I highly suggest trying to see what financial aid you can get. My university agreed to bump up my financial aid package when I went abroad, which basically meant I had more loans. It's worth it, though, especially if the credits transfer, and it's around what you'd be paying at your home university anyways. G'luck.

$12000 US? thats crazy, Im going with AFS and it only costs $9500 AUD for one year!!!! Ideas for getting money, a carwash! We have done carwashes for one weekend and we raised $850 Aud, and thats in Sydney so Im sure you could make alot more (being more people in your country) hope it helps!

well, where would you go to apply for becoming an exchange student? and would you be able to study at a Japanese university for more than a year?

My best friend and I are thinking about going to Japan to study for Mechanical/biomechanical engineering degrees. As this would take several years, we were planning to just learn Japanese and move to Japan.

What University would you suggest for Engineering in Japan? How hard is it to get in? How much is it for Tuition? Is it more difficult for foreign students to be accepted? (Into the University, as well as in the society there)

Oh, btw, about the high price of being an exchange student from the US is the plane ticket. I looked on Hotwire, and a ticket from Houston to Tokyo is $1,200 US. I'm not familiar with the exchange rates, but this is a very debilitating price for most of us.

I wouldnt suggest doing Engineering in Japan, period. Unless you have native level Japanese you wont be able to enter, cope or pass.

Tuition will cost a bit, for example Waseda (a rather good uni) charges 1,455,200 yen for the first year (joing, tuition and maintenance). In US$ its about $13,200 for the first year, more after that for the next 3 years.
