I was just thinking and happened to run across memories of botan rice candy. (It is Japanese, right?) It has to be one of my absolute favorite candys ever, but it can be very hard to find here where I live. This started me thinking, what kinds of candy do the japanese have? What are the traditional kinds? What are the best kinds? Just thought I would ask.

One of the most famous manufacturers of candies is Fujiya, Japanese grow up with "Milky" and the images of Pekochan and Pokochan.

I personally like "amanatto" made of sweet bean jelly. it's really delicious with green tea.

Tradition or Modern?

Don't forget about the powerhouse Lotte.

Lotte, don't they also sponsor their own baseball team?

I always wondered about that German name...

Yeah, they do have their own baseball team.

Lotte is a South Korean company. In Seoul they have this huge amusement center, called Lotte World.

Lotte chocolate is pretty good. I like it better than Hersey!

It isn't really candy, but I love wagashi. Usually beautifully made tiny 'cakes' of sticky rice with beanpaste inside. Each season has it own designs. During Spring you can for example find exquisite ones that resemble cherry blossom. I especially like the one that resembles a peach. Yummmmm!

Welp, that's the drawback of J-food in Europe. We have a few Japanese food stores in our area, but we resort to Thai or Korean products whenever possible.

Morinaga makes the best candy. I lived on Hi-chew and milk caramels for awhile...bu Morinaga stopped (I guess, it's no longer available here...nor anywhere else I used to get it) making the Cream Soda hi-chew kids....that was my favorite...I can still taste it and I miss it.

haha, I bought some POKI about 30 minutes ago at the local conbini 7/11.

198 yen for the box. hmmm

198 yen for a box of 9 chocolate truffle imitation soft choclate.
Great stuff but dam ... that's like 20 yen per dinky piece. Size per ball was a bit smaller than a super ball.

So I guess the Euro prices aren't that bad ... or are they?
Oooops, calulator that's part of my system on my computer says 1.62 Euro
2.5 Euro is 304 yen. Ouch you all are being ripped off!

What do you call that candy that's like a little round flat marshmallow with a filling inside ? Someone brought me some from Japan with apple filling. It was delicious but I can't find it here. I don't remember the name so I can't ask for it.

Apparently they sell these marshmallow sweets in the small grocery shop at the edge of London's chinatown (the shop next to the jewellers). I'll check it out next time I'm in London. Wish I could find them in Scotland though !

Hi-Chews are pretty good. Last pretty long while they melt in your mouth. Gummi products are just as sweet. ;)

Some traditional candy or snacks include - kinako mochi, norimaki mochi, ohagi, shiratama dango (my favorite), karinto, chakin shibori, and sembei with sugar.

Some newer candies are - Pockey, Hi-Chew, Chocolate Almonds (freakin awesome), Milk Caramels, Melty Kiss, Koara no machi, Yan Yan.

I like botan rice candy, ive ate it since i was very young, being raised in an Asian community I could always find it, I actually still can I have alot of fave Japanese candy. I actually prefer Japanese candy to any other. I also like these things I believe are called "haw flakes" that are made of some kind of fruit slightly resembling a plum. Theres thes other candy called "black candy" which is hard candy that kind of tastes like molasses they have a black wrapper with red kanji on it. I also like Kasugai any flavor really but i like pineapple best of all. I know of alot of others I just cant think of the names though. Its all good to me.

I had a friend bring me some candy back from a trip to japan he went on. It was Half puple and Half white and it was in the design of a ying yang. The white side give the sensation of being cold and the purple side actually feels warm. I have been looking for this candy for about a year but i don't know the name of it. Is there anyone that knows the name of it?

Hello - I'm not that familiar with Japanese traditional candy, however I do love modern japanese candy. Fans of Japanese candy living in the US know that it can be hard both to find Japanese candy to buy and to discover new kinds of Japanese candy even if you are a fan and go out of your way to look for new items to try.
Some of the more common items such as Pocky, Hi-Chew and Lotte gums and chewy candy are easy to find in various asian stores (like Korean or Chinese grocery stores), but I've discovered a few delectable delights at a certain candy blog (sorry not enough posts yet to add a link - but its a top hit on google for Candy blog) and also at various Japanese stores in NYC and in norther Jersey.
I find it particularly interesting how traditionally Western candy brands such as Mentos and Kit-Kat seem to have a near endless variety of flavors and variations that are only ever sold in Japan.

Nobody has mentioned Pretz? I love pretz sticks.

I like Meiji chocolate products. And 'Dars' chocolate (not sure if it's actually Japanese but it's written in Katakana on the box and i got it from the konbini, so...)

Hai-chu is good, too.

:giggle: I LOVE candy!!! ^-^
And Meiji makes THE BEST carmels EVER!!! O_O And hai-chuu, they are so sweet and delicious ^-^ Though I'm NOT a fan of their grape-flavoured things, because they taste like beer T-T
Hmm.. I think Kasugai was mentioned as well, but their Melon Gummi are SOOO good, it's unbelievable! :bravo:
Also Kinoko no yama are very good!! ^-^ Cute little mushrooms! I once saw Ichigo Pokki with Kitty-chan on the cover ^-^ Haha, I just HAD to try those and they are delicious! They're just like normal pokki, but they have little bits of strawberry on them ^-^
Oh! This is not REALLY candy, but it's soda, so I guess it goes. :P It's called Calpis Water and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O_O It's the most amazing soda I have EVER tasted!!! :D
They also have something I thought sounded completely odd but was actually quite yummy.. It was a sort of crisp, but it was round and had a caramel-like taste mixed with popcorn. I know it sounds weird, but it is nice. :D I don't remember the name though.. :?

Whenever I'm in London I go to the Japan Centre on Piccadilly. They have a few shelves full of Japanese candy. Yummm! It's really expensive, of course...

I have yet to find a place in Holland that sells Japanese candy, though. I've tried some different kinds of Chinese candy but I ended up throwing them all away.

It is probably a snack named Caramel Corn (http://tohato.jp/products/caramelcorn/) by Tohato.
Not the name itself, but thepackage (http://tohato.jp/products/end_caramelcorn.html) becomes diversified or chaotic since this 21st century.

Yes, people get old.

But a good news for you is that Nestle Japan introduced Chocollabo KITKAT creating your own original package of KITKAT from this month. I think it is good for your grand-grand-grand children in the 22nd century. I am sure that they will believe you were a super star in Japan.
