Japanese or in general? :)

I like any form of potato chips. And i must note that i make a distinct difference between chips made of potatoes and those made of corn. I really don't like corn chips.

And i like fries, especially those large flemish fries.
Chicken McNuggets are also cool. Especially those in Thailand. They're different from those in Holland, you know. :)

Flamish fries, mmhhh... Belgian cuisine, beer and chocolate are special in general. Anyone living there for a while has no choce but to grow fat.
:)

McNuggets: not very fond of them (at least the European ones), they taste very artificial. Probably they are, hehe...

Yeah well, chicken itself doesn't taste like anything and they probably mix all kinds of other meat into a Chicken McNugget as well. It's just that i like the crispy crust they use in Thailand. :)

Swiss Chocolat with nougat. And maybe some cookies too. If there's some piece of fruit nearby I'll probably take a bite out of it :D

In Thailand I tried fried grasshoppers, cockroaches and scorpions. That's a nice crunchy snack, but they all taste similar.

More commonly, pastries, burgers, sandwiches, Japanese "purin" (custard) or chocolate are what I eat between meals to appease my insatiable stomach (and believe it or not, I am rather slim).

I've tried locusts in Burma, they fry them at train stations. Salty, crunchy, not bad. And healthy, lolol.

I love all kinds of nuts, especially cashew and macadamia nuts. The fatter, the tastier. Hm, at the moment I have 16 kgs more than just five years ago, but wouldn't consider myself fat (yet).
:)

Then you are ripe for a trip to India. During my first travel around India and SE Asia, I lost 15kg. Actually, I have only taken 5 or 6 back. Japan is not a country were you get fat. I guess that's true for most Asian countries, but especially were it's hot because you are not so hungry, sweat a lot and drink plenty of water. The ultimate diet. :D

cookies and ice cream my favorites.

Although, I like some of the Japanese snacks. Like karinto. It's some kind of sugar covered ???. The ??? sort of reminds me of really hard pretzels.

I also like black sugar from Okinawa.

my favorite snack is kfc chicken potpies in japan, i never ate a whole one but that jingle in the commercial is still playing over and over again in my mind like a broken record, "kfc no chicken potpie, kfc no chicken potpie, kfc no chicken potpie" awww like an angels touch on a harp, so sweet, so tender.

I've lost a lot of weight during my journey through Burma (just 2 weeks), but for other reasons. At that time I had only traveller cheques and just a bit of cash. In Rangoon (now called Yangon) they told me that my cheques would not be accepted. So I started to trade my personal belongings, like a T-shirt for a rice dish etc. I even managed to acquire a few souvenirs (in exchange for a cheap walkman I bought in Thailand, lol). After I had traded my last T-shirt, I was really short on food, but hey, it was a big adventure!

While my favorite snacks are Wasabi Iso Peanuts and Kakidane Arare, there is a Muscat Juice that I really love as well.

If anyone knows what company makes this delicious juice with peeled little Muscat grapes in the can, then please let me know. I have been meaning to ask my brother-in-law to mail me a few cans, but I keep forgetting. And I don't even know what brand comes with the grapes in it.

I also love wasabi in any form and shape. In Japan I've had my daily share of wasabi potato chips, I'm missing them.

Anpan... I could eat a million of those things, and yet I can't find one of them abroad... I literally stuffed my mouth full of them when I was over there last.

I also miss the japanese convienience store dinners. they were cheap, relatively good for you (compared to a swansons dinners) and tasted waaay better.

noyhauser, anpan is one of my favorites too. I could eat them all the time. Are there any Japanese grocery stores around you? The one we go to has anpan in the frozen section along with the kurimupan and the other -pans.

I have made anman at home a couple times and it turned out really good. Time consuming, but worth it. Yum....

No, there isnt anyplace nearby. I go to a school thats pretty ethnically challenged, in a city that is as well. There are no japanese restaurants nearby, and the stores are "asian markets" that have the bare necessities of Japanese goodness (horrendously overpriced boxes of pocky, and glico sweet curry)

I can't wait to get back to vancouver for the month to refill my Japaneseness. Nothing beats japanese home cooking, like my father's sukiyaki.

Iced green tea, definitely. I really wish it were sold here in the UK - the only thing you can get here is some disgusting lemon flavoured stuff. In Japan you can try all sorts of different green teas etc... and cheap too, and refreshing. I think it's the thing I missed most when I came back here.

Fortunately we get quite a lot of stuff sent from Japan so I don't miss so much other things. If there's anything I desparately want ( like nice mayonnaise for example), I can go down to London and buy it from the Japanese shop there.

But tea... too expensive

Fave drinks - Have a few, love Melon Fanta, bright green, then there the MAD sounding Calpico or Calpis a milky looking drink that's cool mixed with sparkling water, Strawberry flavour is the best. But Ichiban is sparkling Grape juice you get gtom the vending machines. Oh so yummi.

Drinks in Japan are are so good & plentiful too. Never with out a choice.

I drank a lot of Vanilla coke (seems they just got it in 2003,) while I was over there a few weeks ago this summer. I was kind of sad that Nikumon (pork buns,) are seasonal (I had gone each winter for the past several years,) and since I was there during the summer-time I guess it was too hot for hot food (but I was able to still buy corndogs and cheese sticks at the 7-11 which was just as good.) I also ate a lot of the 90yen cheese burgers at Mcdonalds and speaking of Mcdonalds I had ate a Japanese Mcdonalds breakfast for the first time in like four years of going to Japan, it was interesting, pretty good but still I find Mcdonalds in Japan to not be as processed as it's American counter-part where as I'd buy an sausage-mcmuffin over here (it'd be miniature with a synthetic looking egg patty,) and in Japan it'd be different (it'd be regular size with real looking product within the sandwhich itself.) It was pretty great.

I know what your talking about, I also really like Pocky and all those different kinds of candy/snacks that come with free toys (like ultra-man, hamtaro or whichever the product takes after, it's fun like Crackers Jacks but with coolers presents.) I went to Japan-street (supposed to be town,) when I was like 12 or 13 in San Fran and I bought my first Pocari Sweat and pretty much looted the whole candy row, I love japanese products, I don't know any other drink or food that gives me such a good inner-feeling from earting/drinking it, it's silly but true.

mmmm tuna and mayo onigiri......

raw tuna and salmon - yum!

anyone tried fugu? Nothing special really, just a delicasy.

niyasai udon from sobachaya - soo healthy and so yummy!

It's so easy to go to Japan and just eat western style food - maybe I would've tended to do that, but since on this meat-less, sugar-less, oil-less, milk-less diet I've had to eat healthy washoku - now I LOVE Japanese food even more ;)

Pocky (all varieties), dried green peas with wasabi, lychee jelly, Hi-Chews (tried it once-not bad), tempura, drinks with boba, and some other snacks that I can't remember. Why did that idiot tell you such nonsense? Of course it exists over here! Baumkuchen is a very well known and and well liked German speciality. Your teacher is a complete retard if he doesn't know that! :p
For some reason unbeknownst to me, it seems to be quite popular in Japan. Example: in the anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion", when Asuka tells Shinji to think German (so he can synchronize), the only thing he can come up with is "Baumkuchen" :D

"Why did that idiot tell you such nonsense? Of course it exists over here! Baumkuchen is a very well known and and well liked German speciality. Your teacher is a complete retard if he doesn't know that! "

I had that conversation with my teacher, a native of Kiel, who was not an idiot or retard by the way--he had a Ph.D., what degree do you have?--in the late 1970s which is about 25 years ago. Were you around in Germany 35 - 40 years ago when he was last there?

Has Baumkuchen always existed in Germany since time immemorial?

Or was it reverse-imported from Japan after it became popular in Japan?

tsukinoko
May 21, 2004, 09:27
Anman, mochi, edamame, onigiri, kaki, nashi, any kind of cake, macha aisu, 'dars' milk chocolate, lemonwater, green tea, hiamugi, cold and sweet milk coffee - and sometimes a 'sapporo super dry' or a good sake. (I leave away the non-japanese things) :ramen:

BTW, Baumkuchen really is a well known traditional cake in Germany! I even watched a report in Japan about a japanese baker who went to Germany to learn how to do it. And my mum always told me, that she loved to eat it when she was still a child, that was back in the early Sixties and in North Germany, too! So, Golgo, in spite of your teacher having a Ph.D. he must have missed something there, I think. But according to my experience men often don't know about things like names of cakes and other stuff that is more 'women-related', especially those who are not that young anymore.

I just spoke with a friend who has spent 2 years in Germany studying. He said the Baumkuchen they have in Japan--he has eaten them--is quite a bit different from what's eaten Germany.

Maybe that's what my teacher, whom I liked and respected, meant.

Sorry for the confusion.

Lina Inverse
May 22, 2004, 07:07
Well, I think it's only natural that it tastes somewhat different - it's made in Japan with Japanese ingredients. Perhaps they also modified the recipe somewhat because they thought it was neccessary for it to be popular in Japan, who knows.

I LOVE pocky. I'm saving up to go to tokyo, japan for my whole family. It's expensive! I love japan and their technology. This forum is a dream come true, friendly people, and I have alot of questions I need answered. By the way, is pocky supposed to be dipped in coffee or something? It sucks that the company's website that makes pocky is in all japanese only. I'm not that great at japanese. I went to some pocky club-thing and emailed the guy the best I could in japanese trying to tell I wanted to join, he is what I said, heh:

The Morinaga company first put out "Purittsu" ("Pritz", short for Pretzel) in the mid 1960s. Just very thin pretzel sticks.

Then they began coating the Purittsu in chocolate and called it "Pokkii" ("poki !" onomatopoeia for the sound when something like a pretzel breaks in half). For Exporting porposes it was modified the "Pocky" (same way Calpis was changed to "Calpico" for exports). Nowadays I've seen Pocky with different mousse flavor in Japanese markets in LA.

I thought it originated in Bando and spread from there.Juchheim was initially in Osaka camp then moved to Ninoshima, never in Bando according to the records and his diary.
It is quite possible Baumkuchen baked by someone else in Bando around the same period too, but Juchheim was the one who stayed in Japan to popularize it.

I just had an ice milk bar that was filled with azuki beans. :-) The flavor of the beans and the vanilla complemented each other so perfectly. This will be my favorite dessert for awhile. It's cheap and can be found at your neighborhood 7-11 convenience store.
