Hi! Sorry if this is the wrong forum but i was wondering if i could get some help with Japanese since all the Japanese I know is baka.. which wouldnt help me get around Japan. I just would like to know basic words since i cant take any classes right now.

Hi, I'm learning Jap since a month, I think I can help you... Take note that what I'll write here is not that elaborate and always take priority on what other people on the forums will tell you, instead of what I'll tell you...

"Japanese word order fun is." The word order is Subject + Object + Verb. It may sound weird, but you'll get used to it. You said the only word you know is "Baka" ? I'll try to explain the word order with it. And there are no articles (The, An, A) So, "a car" and "cars" sound the same.

私はばかです。
Watashi wa baka desu.
I am stupid.

"Watashi" means I
"Wa" Indicates that "Watashi" is the topic of the sentence.
"Baka" You already know that one...
"Desu" is the verb "To be"

And now, let's suppose you'd want to tell me I'm stupid :(
Here is a list of basic pronouns:

Watashi = I
Anata = You (Singular)
Kare = He
Kanojo = She
Watashitashi = We
Anatatashi = You (plural)
Karera = They (men)
Kanojora = They (women)* not sure...

You should be able to reply back and write "You're stupid." in Japanese...
Try to make this sentence...

PARTICLES

Probably the most important things to know as a beginner...

"Wa" Indicates the topic of the sentence.
Example: "Watashi wa" = I


"Ga" is almost the same thing than "Wa", but you wouldn't understand ;-)
Example: "Watashi ga" = I


"No" can convert personal pronouns into possessive pronouns !
Example: "Watashi no" = My


"Wo" (pronounced o) indicates the direct object
Example: "Watashi wa hon wo yomu." I read a book.


"Ni" indicates the indirect object...
Example: "Anata wa Nihon ni ikimasu ka."Do you go to Japan ?


"De" means By, By means of
Ex1: "Kare wa empitsu de kakimasu." He writes by means of a pencil.

But it also means where an action is happening.
Ex2: Watashi wa watashi no uchi de itte imasu. I'm going, in my house.

Ex2 sounds more like : I'm going, while I'm in my house.

VERBS
Verbs in Japanese have only two tenses: Persent and past. But they have multiple forms...

Miru = To see
Mimasu = More polite form of "To see"
Goranninaru = Keigo form of "to see" :?

But let's get back to the point:

TO SEE
Present = Mimasu
Past = Mimashita

ADJECTIVES
There are -i adjs. and -na adjs.

-i Adjectives have multiple forms:
- Present
- Negative
- Past
- Negative Past

Muzukashii = Difficult
Muzukashikunai = Not difficult
Muzukashikatta = (Was) difficult
Muzukashikunakatta = (Wasn't) difficult


-Na adjs. don't have multiple forms like -i adjs.

Genki = Well, healthy
Genki na hito = Healthy person

Oh yeah, and a hint for you: When I began to learn Japanese, I've made a little dictionary classed by categories (Nouns, Particles, Verb, Adjectives) and when I knew a new word, I wrote it in that dict, with its meaning next to this word.

And I've made a little document about some grammar points (How to use some Particles, etc) and a little .txt document with Japanese phrases inside..
Like when I learnt a new thing, I made a sentence related to what I've learned and some new words I know, and so on...
