In this thread I would like you to tell me of any relationships in the world with the number 12. For example there are 12 months and 12 hours on your standard clock face. I like to point out these things to prove the usefulness of 12. Perhaps you know something obscure that I do not?

A good one I like to point out is that, excluding the thumb, people have 3 knuckles on each of their four fingers, for a total of 12 knuckles on each hand. By using the thumbs as markers, you can use this to count to twelve on your hand, or keep game scores using both hands, etc. Apparently, people in India have been doing this for centuries.

Another one is that there are 365 days a year, very close to 360, which is very neatly divided by 12 to get 30. And 30 being two dozen plus a half dozen. For this reason, I suggest six day weeks, where you get five days left over every standard year. This gives you exactly 5 weeks a month, with 5 months having a "leap day". Naturally, I suggest "leap days" be days off!

However some things threw me off.

What does なっちゃうdo in this sentence, I at first thought it would have a negative connation

Also in this sentence moraeru means what? to get? to receive?
This was my translation based on the pictures, and it seems to make

I would guess this ought to mean "This system was established so that the nation's medical bill would be borne by the country as a whole."

However, I do not really understand によって成り立っている. The definitions that I find in the dictionary for によって and 成り立つ do not seem to work.


2. 世界一の長寿国になったといっても、実は喜んでばかりもいられない。

I'm guessing this roughly means "Although (Japan) became the country with the world's highest life expectancy, it is in fact not all good news."

Is いられない the negative potential form of いる (居る)? In what sense is this used? Is it esentially 喜んでいられない with ばかりも inserted?


3. そんなことは前から分かっていたことではないかと思うかもしれないが、実は寿命が伸びるスピードが予想以上 に速かったのである。

I believe the second part of this means "in fact, the increase in life expectancy was faster than expected"

The first part looks to me like "Maybe I wonder whether you/someone didn't know that before, but...", but this doesn't sound correct in English. I don't think I properly understand it.

Last semester at University I took an introductory class to Japanese as an elective, and since then have been very interested in the language. I've done a bit more self study online, but I have decided to purchase a test book and teach myself properly. A bit of research told me that the 2 Genki books are quite good (even for self study), however, my problem is whether I should get the first or second book in the series.
I can't find a list of the contents of each book online, so I thought I'd outline what I know so far, and if anybody who has experience with the books could let me know if I'd be better off with I or II, then that'd be great!
What I know:
  1. Hiragana & Katakana & Pronunciation
  2. Numbers
  3. Times & Dates
  4. wa, ga, ka, ni, no, to, de, (h)e, (w)o, mo particles
  5. i & na adjectives (past/present, +/-)
  6. Verbs (past/present, +/-)

What I don't know:
  1. The basics of verbs. I just know some common verbs, but know very little about u/ru and iru/eru and how to conjugate them (stems?)
  2. I know very little Kanji - just basics like numbers
  3. Politeness levels and what to use in which situations
  4. Obviously, a lot of vocabulary

So, that's a basic rundown of what I know. Would I be better of with Genki I or II, or perhaps even a different book if anybody has any recommendations? If it comes down to it, I can always do a bit more self study online to fill in the gaps between I and II.
