    misaki-meguri

I visit the cape that you told me past time.
promised to go with you. It is not possible to do now.
The bus of the round in the cape runs with blue sea that stretches to the window.
when sinks deep sadness in my chest,
finish this travel and return to the town

Ahhhhh 「Misaki Meguri」 happens to be one of my favorite "folk" songs. The lyrics are so bitter-sweet it makes me teary-eyed everytime I hear it (it is in my i-Pod).
This song was very popular and I would hear it all the time on the radio/TV when I was a wee kid but back then, it did nothing for me. Now that I am a lot older, I GET it. The fast tempo of the song makes the lyrics even more poignant.

    Misaki Meguri

Hello from Greece! I like Misaki Meguri too. It's my Japanese friend's favourite karaoke song! I wonder...Could you please post the (romanised) japanese lyrics so as to surprise him singing it with him this July when I am going to meet him?!
I can not find them anywhere, though I've tried! Thank you very much!

I have heard of her name... Isn't she the quasi-classical singer who's just released a CD of cover versions of Japanese songs? I do remember the original. We had to sing that song in our elementary school choir.. lol

I saw Hayley last year. She came to Japan as a member of Celtic Woman on the "New Journey" tour in Tokyo. They were great!!

I wonder whether Matsutouya (nee Arai) Yumi falls in the folk song category? Her old songs coincided with my youth, so I love them.

    "Ano hi ni kaeritai"

    "Sotsugyou shashin"

Both songs remind me of my days in high school and university.

    "Umi o miteita gogo"
    http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=ar_twSQbTlc
"Yamate no Dolphin" is the place I went with my first boyfriend. (I lived in Yokohama until age 20.)
FYI, the restaurant Dolphin is not in Yamate, and there was no view of the sea from the place, even when it was still new and the land reclamation project was still in its infancy!

I used to listen to Yumi Arai a lot. My absolute favorite has to be Cobalt Hour. The musicianship displayed on that song was just incredible especially Haruomi Hosono on Bass and Masataka Matsutouya on Keyboard.

Umi wo miteita gogo is a great song, too. One thing I want to say about Arai is that while she gets bad raps for her singing, I think it is THAT VOICE that "makes" those songs. There are many singers out there who are considered "good singers". I tend to find those "good singers" rather boring.

Sadly, I don't have any memorable moments with my past girlfriends attached to any of her songs... I remember my colleague telling me about the first time he drove on "Chuou Freeway". He told me how excited it was when he saw "the horse racing track on the right" and "the beer factory on the left".

Sukiyaki - Ue wo muite arukou - Kyu Sakamoto

    The Lyrics:
I'll look up while I'm walking
    Ue wo muite arukou
    上を向いて歩こう

So the tears don't fall from my eyes
    Namida ga koborenai youni
    涙がこぼれないように

I think back to spring days
    Omoidasu haru no hi
    思い出す春の日

    It's a lonely night
    Hitoribocchi no yoru
    一人ぼっちの夜

I'll look up while I'm walking
    Ue wo muite arukou
    上を向いて歩こう

    And count the scattered stars
    Nijinda hoshi wo kazoete
    にじんだ星をかぞえて

I think back to summer days
    Omoidasu natsu no hi
    思い出す夏の日

    It's a lonely night
    Hitoribocchi no yoru
    一人ぼっちの夜

    Happiness is above the clouds
Shiawase wa kumo no ue ni
    幸せは雲の上に

    Happiness is above the sky
Shiawase wa sora no ue ni
    幸せは空の上に

I'll look up while I'm walking
    Ue wo muite arukou
    上を向いて歩こう

So the tears don't fall from my eyes
    Namida ga koborenai youni
    涙がこぼれないように

Even while I cry I walk on
    Naki nagara aruku
    泣きながら歩く

    It's a lonely night
    Hitoribocchi no yoru
    一人ぼっちの夜

Sadness is in the shadow of the stars
Kanashimi wa hoshi no kage ni
    悲しみは星の影に

Sadness is in the shadow of the moon
Kanashimi wa tsuki no kage ni
    悲しみは月の影に

I'll look up while I'm walking
    Ue wo muite arukou
    上を向いて歩こう

So the tears don't fall from my eyes
    Namida ga koborenai youni
    涙がこぼれないように

Even while I cry I walk on

Miagete goran yoru no hoshi wo

    The lyrics:
Miagete goran yoru no hoshi wo.
Chiisa na hoshi no, shiisana hikari ga,
    Sasayaka na shiawase wo utatteru.

Miagete goran yoru no hoshi wo.
Bokura no you ni na mo nai hoshi ga,
    Sasayaka na shiawase wo utatteru.

Teo tsuna no boku to, oi kake you,
yume o utarina ga kurushi kuna hunta na i so

Miagete goran yoru no hoshi wo.
Chiisa na hoshi no, shiisana hikari ga,
    Sasayaka na shiawase wo utatteru.

Miagete goran yoru no hoshi wo.
Bokura no you ni na mo nai hoshi ga,
Sasayaka na shiawase wo ino teru.

    -Translation-

Look up at the stars in the dark night sky.
Hear the little brilliant stars sing their happy songs,
Singing a little happy song high in the heavens.

Look up at the stars in the dark night sky.
Hear the nameless stars pray like us for happiness,
Praying for a tiny happy life high in the heavens.

My sweetheart, join hands with me.
    Let's chase our dreams together.
I'm never worried as long as I'm with you.

    Momotaro san

Now these are classic folk songs, something Kintaro & Momotaro san (Can you spot Namie Amuro?)

I was going to add "yuuyake koyake" but it made me too melocholy.

    Sakura, Sakura

Sakura, Sakura is a traditional Japanese folk song usually sung by a choir or played by a koto ensemble. The traditional version is very pretty, but here are a couple of different versions that are quite good.

First, by jazz legend, Thelonious Monk

And a more traditional version but played by guitarist, Kindgren.

(You should also listen to his version of J.S. Bach's Air...Vunderbar!

Dogen, the tune that Monk is playing is not Sakura Sakura but another beautiful tune titled Koujou No Tsuki (荒城の月). I didn't know he'd recorded it. Thanks for posting!

Oops, my bad. I was too laxy to take a look at all the kanji. But the 2 songs have some similarity, especially when all jazzed up. It's classic 60's jazz.

    Country Road

This is John Denver's classic folk song from the 70s sung in Japanese for Ghibli Studio's 1995 anime, "Whispers of the Heart" or "Mimi wo Sumaseba." Some Amerikajin might cringe after reading that but please give it a listen, it's not bad at all.

    Kayou-Kyoku

At the risk of dating myself, does anyone remember stars from the 1960's ? i.e. Kayoko Moriyama, Keiko Matsuyama, Frank Nagai.... Or, should I just consider myself too old to have membership in jref, and call the undertaker.... biru san1 in Boston.

There are few of us here who like old skool Kayoukyoku that I know of. I was born in 1969 but my parents were and still are big fans of the music from the olden days so I grew up listening to it.

One of our members, Pachipro, has a weekly chatroom dedicated to Japanese oldies on PALTALK that may interested you.

Welcome to JREF, and GO SOX!!

    Ame ame fure fure

Probably due to Typhoon no. 19 that's heading this way, Tokyo was cold and rainy all day today. And my umbrella broke in the wind! What a Monday.

Well, here's an old children's song that's in keeping with this weather.
