Does anyone know what this word actually is?

    国際交流パーティー - Tokyo International Party

Sometimes on Japanese films when someone says "I'm sorry" they say what I hear as "sumano", what is the actual word they are saying? And is it short way of saying I'm sorry?

I think they are trying to say "suman" short form of sumimasen.

Yes, it can be "suman no(u)" if the speaker is an old person.

i heard "Yoshida Zengo" say it in the 1970 film Tora! Tora! Tora! he says it when he is speaking to Yamamoto Isoroku in the Japanese Navy ministry about the Teikoku Rikugun and being unable to successfully fight Army militaristic and Pro-Axis policies

The man who played him looked rather old, like he was in 50s or 60s, ive looked on wikipaedia and he was played by "Junya Usami"

so is it a slang way of saying "sorry" or is it archaic, like how "Fusou" is an archaic name for Japan?

is it commonly heard, or is sumimasen/moushiwake arimasen more common these days?

is it sometimes shortened into "suman"? as im sure i heard this in Otokotachi no Yamato

    anyway ありがとう!

No(u) is a sentence final particle, which is used mostly by old people. It's close to "ne".

"Suman" is a non-polite form of "sumimasen", as same as "sumanai". It's commonly used by male.
