FantasPT: use Denshi Jisho - Online Japanese dictionary, it is simply best online Japanese dictionary for English speaker, in addiction to Edict database, it gives Kanji details and sentence examples too, once you better in Japanese, you can try out 蝗ス隱槭闍ア蜥後蜥瑚恭繝サ鬘櫁ェ槭荳ュ蝗ス隱櫁セ樊嶌讀懃エ「 - goo霎樊嶌.

Why do people seem to be so strongly correlating "learning Japanese" with "looking up stuff in a dictionary".

If that makes up a major part of your Japanese studies, you're doing something wrong.
