When I leave a restaurant and it was very good (mostly when I'm in a local place and the owners are there), what can I say? I end up just saying thank you, but know there must be something better to express how much I enjoyed it....which inevitably happens.

Thanks for any & all info, as well as pronunciation tips...

Saying "gochisou sama deshita" to the staff when leaving the restaurant is a nice gesture. :)
And prefacing that with "doumo" is OK, too...:)

I've also heard "osewa sama deshita" or "totemo oishikatta desu" but I think "gochisou sama deshita" is fine. Probably more than what most Japanese will leave with. 😌

ご馳走様でした。とてもおいしかったです。
Gochisou sama deshita. Totemo oisikatta desu.

This would be the best, I think.:)

If you want to say you'll come back again, you can say "Mata kimasu!" ... (I'll return another time/another day).

It's good that you are going to Japanese restaurants because the more you interact with Japanese people, the more you learn. :)

He he! This helped me too :) We have some restaurants here and I often eat there :) Yummy! And I make some recipes at home 🍜
