Talking My method for learning the hiragana tables!

    国際交流パーティー - Tokyo International Party

    かな!
Hello everyone (: I am new to the forums!
I have recently been learning the Japanese Kana, and my progress seems to be very fast with my current method. I have successfully memorised how to recognise and write 37 of the Hiragana characters from merely 4-5 hours of work, spread out over 1 week.

*Firstly I scanned the hiragana table pages from my 'Japanese for busy people' book (or you can print off a table online) in order to make notes on the table (I ticked off the ones I knew).
*I also printed off the rules with the hiragana, which if any of you want I'd be happy to type out for you (:
*After doing this, I drew out the vowel characters (a, i, e, u, o) onto 4 separate index cards and their English equivalents on the other side of the card. --I highly recommend purchasing index cards, which you can get from most stationary stores and some newsagents, I believe it was because of these I learnt so quickly!--
*I placed these cards into a pile with the hiragana side facing me and I went through them (without prior learning) attempting to recognise what the English equivalent was.
*After feeling confident that I knew the first 5 kana off by heart I began learning the entire 'a' column (e.g. ka, ha, ta etc.) by again, writing the Japanese hiragana on the one side of the index card, and the English equivalent on the other.
*Also using this method, I managed to learn how to write the hiragana characters by memorising their appearance and replicating it on paper, then checking I got it right by flipping the index card and showing the true symbol.
*Tick off the ones you feel you have learnt off by heart on your printed hiragana table.
For me, this method had amazing results as I said previously, it enabled me to learn the hiragana extremely quickly and easily I'm sure if I put even more effort in, the entire table would be learnt in a week (the only problem is the rest of the alphabets ;P).
I suppose this method is more for kinaesthetic learners who need to be actively doing something during learning, and perhaps even visual learners. It has worked well for me and my boyfriend, so hopefully it will work for many others too (:
Thanks for taking your time to read my post! I hope it helps and let me know how you get on ^^

There are a couple tricks to get used to with IMEs that often trip people up to start with. For は you must type "ha" even in locations where it is pronounced "wa". If you accidentally hit space and get kanji, you can hit space again and pick the kana version. The other one that trips a lot of people up is ん - if you only type one n it might not convert properly, depending on what comes after. For example, a word like まんいち where you have "n" followed by "i", you can't just type "ni" as that produces に. n'i or nni works. (Basically, don't worry, it's not just you!)

Good job on learning your hiragana, though! It's important to try stuff and find methods that work for you - and it sounds like you've got a great attitude.

Oh awesome! Thanks for the advice! I must remember that, especially about the 'ha' and 'wa' kana. I also recently noticed trouble with the 'n' kana! Thanks for bringing that up too I will most certainly require a lot of practice before I get it 100%

And thanks very much! The only thing I am worried about now is the Kanji! I can't see myself ever understanding that e.e but my boyfriend has been teaching himself some of it, he seems to be understanding it well! Maybe I can! Ahaa :3
