First of all, you need to figure out what the dictionary form of the verb is.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanes...nsions#Te_form

As in the wiki page above, "-tte" has three possibilities for the dictionary form; "-u", "-tsu" or "-ru". Thus, the dictionary form of "motte" is either one of "mou", "motsu" or "moru". Then, you look up these verbs in the dictionary, and you get the meaning of the correct verb(in this case, "motsu" or "to have").

    Usage of -te form
    -tte iru
いる iru: It means "to be doing". For example: 待っている matte iru: "I am waiting". This is also used in some situations where the English equivalent does not use "to be doing". For example: 知っている shitte iru: "I know", 持っている motte iru: "I have", ここに住んでいる koko ni sunde iru: "I live here". Colloquially, in this form the "i" often disappears, so 待っている matte iru becomes 待ってる matteru and 知っている shitte iru becomes 知ってる shitteru.
    Dictionaries are your friend.
