Train from fukuoka airport to kokura, fukuoka

Hi guys,

im trying to figure out getting to fukuoka from the uk. Im looking up airports to fly to and it appears that fukuoka airport is going to be the cheapest option (compared to flying to kyushu airport).

My question is for those that have been to fukuoka and headed out of the airport via train. How easy is it to get a train from the airport to kokura (that is where the hotel is im thinking of stopping in)? Especially, how easy is it to get the correct tickets etc when you really dont know alot of japanese at all. This is what is worrying me. Im thinking im going to get a ticket for the wrong direction and end up in okinawa or something. XD

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Porl''

There are three ways to get to Kokura from Hakata station in the train.

1. Shinkansen bullet train
20min ride, ・3500 for reserved seat, ・2050 unreserved. Kokura is the first stop and all Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama stop there. Trains leaving the station every ten minutes or less (timetable.) Not very adventurous because so many foreigners have already taken Shinkansen.

2. Conventional express train
Around 45min ride, ・2050 (reserved seat,) ・1750 (unreserved.) Two services of Sonic (for Oita) and an Ariake (from Kumamoto) express an hour. The most interesting choice since JR Kyushu has been famous for latest technologies such as tilting trains.

3. Conventional commuter train
Around 100min, ・1250. 4-5 trains an hour. Not quite recommended unless you travel extremely light and curious about local life.

[Coach-seat price listed above, not business class.]

TIP: Japanese tend to be bad at English listening skills but they are sometimes good at reading as long as you print it. Try to communicate in written English at the ticket booth and the platform.

If you're going to have lots of bags, it might be easier to catch the bus from the airport.

By train: You have to catch a shuttle bus from International Terminal to Domestic, then Subway to Hakata, then train to Kokura.

The express bus to Kokura departs from the International Terminal, so it would be easiest if you have lots of baggage.
