The Japanese concept of "fate" is same as a Westerner now.

Now. And what about earlier?

I'm interested in this too.

BTW, there is a song of Zard "Unmei no roulette o mawashite" - "Spin the roulette of fate" [for Detective Conan/Meitantei Conan].

It is "Inga-Ouhou" or "Shikisoku-Zekuu". Sorry, I can't good explain in English.
But "Inga-Ouhou" is not "retribution".

I think this ideas about "fate" is very Christian way of thinking.

Konbanwa Nangi-san!

That's ok, now at last I know what to look for.

From Cambridge Dictionary:

fate
1 [C usually singular] what happens to a particular person or thing, especially something final or negative, such as death or defeat:

2 [U] a power that some people believe causes and controls all events, so that you cannot change or control the way things will happen.

destiny
1 [C] the things that will happen in the future

2 [U] the force that some people think controls what happens in the future, and which cannot be influenced by people

"Fate/Destiny" is Christian, but I think that "fate" as "karma" is also in Buddhist thinking. Of course, "karma" you can change by doing good deeds, but some people do believe that fate can be changed too. Of course in Buddhism and Shitno there is no "end of the world" liek in Christianity.

"Unmei" is always translated to destiny, but is its meaning close to this of "destiny" I wrote, or rather not?

P.S. for Duncan. ==> Nie dziekuj tyle, to wyglada komicznie... XD

I think Japanese "Unmei" is same as "Fate/Destiny" that you wrote.
