The Latin American Nikkei
Internment and the loss of personal liberty was not limited to American and Canadian Nikkei. Citing the reason of "military necessity" the U.S. government encouraged Latin American countries, primarily Peru, to deport Axis citizens to the U.S. for internment. Over two-thirds, or 2,300, of the Latin American internees deported to the United States were Japanese nationals or their families; over eighty percent came from Peru.
