Question about High school

Hi all,

I've been looking for some information about some classes/courses in japanese highschool. I really want to know about the way math, physics and chemistry are taught, and what you're supposed to know at the end of your High school career (or what you need to know for the university entrance exams).
I was hoping that anyone who knows anything about this subject could tell me something about it.

I've still got my textbooks.

Ok, lessons are taught from the textbook with the teaching standing up writing on the board, students copying and being quized on answering questions that are in the text.

They learn the normal stuff you get taught in High school in math, physics and chemistry.

I have a question too, but I don't want to start a new thread for it.

I understand how the Japanese teaching method works (it's all memorization which means I'm going to have to teach myself everything since I don't learn that way.) But I was wondering if they make exchange students do the same things as the regular students.

It's not that I'm lazy, but I'm just curious, because I don't speak enough Japanese to be writing the same tests and to understand notes that are done in class. So do they just make the exchange students sit there? Do you just do the class at your own pace? Or with everybody else?

You will take class with everyone else but most probably have an extra lesson a couple times a week for just Japanese study.

I spent lessons going over kanji and vocab, drawing pictures or wagging in the computer room where I first discovered Jref

You can take the tests and stuff, the teachers will push you in that direction but don't take the exams, its a little too high stress when your goal is to learn Japanese, not maths. I did well in physics anyway, 80% average! :P

Depends on your Japanese school. I went to most of my classes, but except for PE, Home Ec and English could do my own thing. Study, read, whatever. Had Japanese lessons instead of going to regular class a couple of times a week. Didn't do a single exam that year. But other people had a lot more pressure to keep up with the Japanese students and were at stricter schools. Luck of the draw.

oh i want to get better at studying while im in japan but i dont want to take exams, especially math im crap at maths! whats 2+2?

Thats EXACTLY what I had and it was great fun. Most of my free time was spent talking to the foreign teachers room, who were both my age anyway (bah i was older than one of them and I got treated like some little kiddy and they got the whole 'teacher' treatment ). Want to grab a starbucks before lunch?
