tokyo to nikko train round trip fare and something else

hi there-

i've done the usual due diligence when looking for information (google, etc) and i can't seem to find the approximate cost of a round trip train ticket from tokyo to nikko in december 2004. if anyone can give me a ballpark figure, that'd be great (the cheaper, the better ).

also, while i'm on the subject, are the temples in nikko even open during the winter? are they as beautiful as i would imagine them to be if i'm lucky enough to visit them while there is snow around?

thanks!

Nikko is gorgeous, but I went in the spring. I seem to recall a ticket costing around 15 bucks from Asakusa, but I could be mistaken. The temples aren't to be missed, though some of the more famous exhibits charge extra.

the lonely planet japan guidebook has all this kind of information. and much much more. if you are planning on visiting multiple places, a guidebook is very useful.

but try this fare/timetable lookup:
http://grace.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperd01.cgi

similar to the above, but in english.
