Kinkakuji to be renovated

Kinkakuji roof to be renovated

The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, one of the most famous tourist attractions in Kyoto, is undergoing renovation work on its 100,000-shingle roof for the first time in 22 years.

Workers are erecting scaffolding on the two lower roofs, making the temple, Kinkakuji in Japanese, look as if it were being stored away in a huge basket. The temple will completely disappear from the public view in a few days, the entire structure covered by vinyl sheets.
