lrnj.com's program
Alright, so I recently downloaded the program at lrnj.com and checked it out.
Not a bad program. What I disliked about it was I didn't catch onto to where i had to sell my potatoes at... So I decided to go fight slime instead.. Although from what I saw out of it, it teaches you hiragana/katakana/kanji and then it tests you on it. It randomizes the characters up as you fight the slime. I would like to give this a 10 star until someone else can come along with a better Japanese Language video game. Because if someone could, they would sell off the shelves for serious money, however the creator of Slime Forest puts this game into an Nintedno Entertainment System(NES) format, which I have to congratulate them on an ingenius capability one could find out of it. I take into consideration that many people may be oldtimers.. and about the only things they've really used are colecovision and atari, and they also may be clueless to how they use a Playstation 2 with all of it's buttons... However down grading it into a simple RPG-NES format makes things simplistic. 10 star program for the Nihongo learner that wants to train their character skills. Any ideas or comments? |

I couldn't stand the game premise or the hero and I wasn't keen on the looks or the game play. It also (when I tried it last) consumed an incredible amount of CPU power considering how basic it was. It ran SLOOOOOW on my home computer. |

For those interested, I've put together an RPG with a similar concept. It helps you learn information regarding Hiragana, Katakana & Kanji. In addition, there is a vocabulary option.
It's available at http://www.tbns.net/knuckles/ |

I just downloaded and tried both games (the one on lrnj.com and the one made by knuckles) and I have to say that I enjoyed the Knuckles in China Land game much more.
I completely agree with PaulTB about the premise, hero, looks, and game play for Slime Forest. The fact that it even teaches Japanese (which I haven't even run into yet) is the only thing giving it a 6 in my book. As for Knuckles in China Land, the story works for me, as well as the graphics and whatnot. The game does a great job teaching katakana and hiragana (even vocabulary) in a fun and innovative way. If we were rating this game, I would give it a 9! Great job knuckles!

The biggest problem I had with Slime Forest was the fact that if you take too long, more slimes attack you, which only makes it worse because you feel really rushed. I know that when I feel rushed, I don't do as well.
While KiCL has a similar idea (i.e. a time limit), you don't feel as rushed playing it, plus you are able to access characters you have already "encountered". |
