For today protests are also expected to take place in the U.S. and Europe. I read somewhere that the impending war against Iraq helped to form the largest anti-war movement in the U.S. since Vietnam.

Anti-war protests expected in Japan

More than 10,000 people are expected to protest a possible U.S.-led war against Iraq this weekend in cities throughout Japan and at some U.S. military installations.

The demonstrations will coincide with anti-war rallies in the United States and more than 25 other countries.

About 80 people are expected to stage an anti-war protest outside Yokota Air Base on Saturday morning, according to a petition organizers submitted to the Japanese National Police.

Japan kicks off war protest against Iraq war

Several thousand people staged rallies across Japan Saturday, kicking off a worldwide demonstration against war in Iraq. Protests were being held from the nation's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido to the southernmost Okinawa, ranging from study group meetings to concerts.

Thousands march against war in Tokyo

Thousands of people took to the streets of Tokyo on Saturday to march against a possible U.S.-led attack on Iraq as a part of global protests.

Thirty-three nongovernmental organizations such as Greenpeace Japan and Peace Boat staged a joint march and concert titled "World Peace Now" that stressed the role of civilian power in preventing war.

Civilians are the ones who suffer most in war, participants said.

A "peace parade" involving more than 5,000 people, including foreigners and young people, began at Hibiya Park around 3 p.m. and proceeded through the Ginza shopping district. The concert was held in the park prior to the parade.
