Japanese find novel way to relax with Brontė Day

YORKSHIRE'S most famous writers are to be honoured with a public holiday for some of their biggest fans.

The Anglophile Japanese of the Nagano region have decided to stage a regional bank holiday on June 6 to commemorate the Brontė sisters. Charlotte, Emily and Anne are revered in Japan, and every schoolchild has read their classic novels set on the bleak Yorkshire moorland which the sisters knew so well. Haworth, where the sisters spent most of their lives, is a magnet for Japanese tourists with about 6,500 visiting each year.
The Brontės are especially well known in Nagano, which hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics, as its people have a passion for all things English from fish and chips to cottage gardens.
