Nikko (Nihon Kogaku Kôgyô) was founded in 1917 when three Japanese optical manufacturers merged; in 1918 Nikko started its optical glass production and research. Since 1946 the company is known as "Nikon".

Find out more at the official Nikon web site and check their portfolio site for more historical details.
