And now for something completely different (almost)
I was just looking through the web and I "stumbled" upon the "6 stages of addiction" on an alcoholics website (please don't ask how I got there in the first place). A funny thought just crossed my head regarding it and the behavior of the Japanese (yup a sweeping generalization again).
Now take what's posted here with a grain of salt and a sense of humor. There are other threads on the subject but this obviously isn't as serious as the other replies. Now on to the post: Stage 1: Delight and Discovery "Oh lookie! Some backward foreign shanty town is just WAITING to be colonized! Ooh ooh! My turn!" "We are superior to you all because we were able to conquer you with ease!" "We are superior to you all because we built our 'economic miracle' out of the rubble!" Stage 2: Protection and Promotion "The Japanese culture is about harmony! Now, we can't have outsiders disrupting that, can we?" Stage 3: Defense and Denial "War crimes? What war crimes!? In war, s*** happens! By the way, we were forced into that horrible horrible war where millions of our fellow citizens (Japanese) died." "What are you talking about!? Everything you said was fabricated by people who hate us! Our record is clean I tells you!" Stage 4: Resentment and Relapse "We didn't do anything wrong! You just hate us for being ourselves!" "Look at those riots! They don't look too friendly to us! Why should we do the same for them!? See!? How we treat them is SOOO totally justified!" Stage 5: Acceptance and Abstinence (to be filled) Stage 6: Growth and Gratitude (ditto) I'd say Stage 5 is a looong way from now. So really, this "I'm better than all of you" sentiment is just a really bad drug addiction for the Japanese! So how do we remedy this? I'm sure there are plenty of rehab programs we can use for reference. What was that? You didn't find this to be funny? Okay, I'll be quiet now.

Heh, I looked at the quotes first and was thinking "wait a second, what's this got to do with alcoholism," then I saw the stage titles. Yeah, I read stuff strangely. Thanks for sharing!
![]() I think one of the good points that I'm interested in seeing people address eventually is when you said "how do we remedy this?" It's a question I've kept asking myself. I was meaning to start a thread about that.... |

And now for something REALLY different.
I notice you are both Americans. Something really different and interesting would be for you to use this method of analysis on your own countries behavior. Iraq is maybe too much of a hot potato at the moment, how about Vietnam? Looking forward to your analysis.
