Finally an album for Olivia

Olivia Lufkin is finally going to release her long awaited first album. After 2 years in which she released 6 singles, this half Japanese, half American singer will deliver this 13 track compilation on the 6th of december. Lufkin, who was once the lead singer of dance outfit D&D, turned her back on dancemusic as she started her solo carreer by releasing powerfull rocktracks. Recently her releases mellowed down a bit with the poppy "Dekinai" and her latest single "Color of your spoon" which is even a ballad.

Olivia Lufkin

Welcome! This is a thread for Olivia Lufkin.
Olivia is a very talented half-Japanese half-American singer. She hasn't released anything new for two years, but her site has been recently updated with news saying she will be releasing a new single soon.
Olivia's music ranges from rock to more alternative sounding songs. She began her solo career as a mainstream artist, but because of poor promotion by her record labl, Avex Trax, she did not become successful in mainstream Japan. However, she was switched to Avex Cutting Edge label, and gained a number of fans.
She has released two albums, Synchronicity and The Lost Lolli, and four mini albums. Synchronicity was released in 2000, and included her first six singles. Her second album, The Lost Lolli, was released in 2004 and was recorded entirely in English. Her mini albums, "Internal Bleeding Strawberry", "Merry and Hell Go Round", "Comatose Bunny Butcher", and "The Return of the Chlorophyll Bunny" were all released between the albums' releases.

I listened to her albums a while back. Some good songs like Cupid, but for the most part not my taste. One thing about her that I noticed is that the title of her song is almost always repeated in the chorus (many times, not just in the chorus, but as the chorus), which although not unheard of, irks me a bit since then it becomes very predictable and very overdone. It seems that she writes the lyrics before the music, which isn't bad in itself, but at times she tries to force the music into the lyrics. Still, like in the afore-mentioned Cupid, she seems to like to experiment with sounds (when she's not doing more commercial hits like Color of Your Spoon), which could be a good sign.

Definitely lots of Western influences, considering her background, so if you like Western female pop-rock, this is your thing. She seems promising, so I'm hoping she'll improve over time. Plus, she also has the attraction factor.

Yeah, Olivia's songs can be kind of hit-and-miss. I guess it just depends on what you prefer.

And I agree, she has an awesome voice. I actually think she has one of the best female voices on the Japanese music scene. It's refreshing, with so many idols with cutesy little voices, who release one single and then are gone from the music scene forever.

Hahahah, she does look very Western! Although, in some pictures, she looks more Japanese, and in others she looks more like her American half.
It is hard though, to find Olivia fans. (except on one forum I can think of dedicated to her)

J-rockers and merry-go-rounds? Never noticed the connection before... although, another one of Olivia's songs is called "Blind Unicorn", and does have a connection with merry-go-rounds. Hahah, at the end of the song, there is the sound of a merry-go-round breaking down. It's a strange sound, really. One time my mom was in my room, and when the song ended, she said "shh! What's that sound????!!! " I said, "eh...that's the music. " She then said she thought it was an alien attack or something. I do hope she wasn't serious.

Wow. I'm actually surprised people replied to this thread. I was pretty nervous, it being my first thread and all.

I think Olivia's voice is really nice. I just heard her song "A Little Pain"
To me she looks more American than Japanese but she's pretty none the less.

Well, I think the "hit and miss" factor shows that she isn't afraid to experiment, which I think is good, since there seems to be a lack of creativity in a lot of popular music these days..

Yeah, I think Olivia looks more Western than Asian. But, that's not a bad thing is it?

Argh, I want her to release a new album! It's been almost 3 years since her last album.

I was recently reading an interview with Olivia, and in it it said that when she came to start her music career in Tokyo at 16, she didn't know any Japanese! I found that a bit surprising, I had never noticed that she didn't speak Japanese well until I heard a few online promotions. She seems to have troubles with the language... Must be tough, considering her music career is stationed in Japan..

^ I don't know about Japan but in Hong Kong there are ALOT of singers and actors that come from North America. Their grasp of the language is terrible but then they slowly learn and they end up speaking Chinese, Mandarin, and sometimes even Japanese. It's amazing how they adapt so quickly and can make it big. But I guess if you have people coaching you and you are constantly exposed to the language you will pick it up really quickly even if it's still not 100%.
