ANOTHER poisonous Chinese export?

http://mdn.mainichi.jp/national/news...na019000c.html
Five family members in Ichikawa, Chiba, were taken to hospital suffering from vomiting and diarrhea after they ate the dumplings, while another two women from Chiba and three family members from Takasago, Hyogo Prefecture, also reportedly ate the dumplings.
One of the family members from Ichikawa, a 5-year-old girl, was left unconscious in serious condition, while the other family members fell seriously ill after eating the dumplings, which were sold frozen through a consumer cooperative.
A survey by the Ichikawa public health center detected the insecticide methamidophos in the dumplings in levels that far exceeded normal standards. Police are investigating the incident, and are considering forming a case on suspicion of attempted murder.
China is already known for having exported lead-laden toys, toothpaste, and other common household items (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20247641/). Now, it seems insecticide has been found in a certain brand of Chinese-made dumplings. What do you think of the matter? Is China slacking in regulating what it exports? Is it all a plot to poison the Japanese? Or is it just Chinese producers looking to sell en-masse without watching what they do in order to make some money? Personally, I think Chinese factories are working under very poor conditions and are desperate to sell their products. My knowledge on this matter is very limited, however. Hopefully this thread will remedy that!

I would side at these points, knowing some chinese facturies and their conditions directly from my stays.
But one never knows, indeed.

China..

I think China has and still is going through certain phases with quality control but I believe ultimately it will pull inline with western countries over time.

I'm sure it realizes that certain things have affected it so far..

I noted the government took immediate reaction in regards to slave labour at a merchandise factory that was an officially licenced Olympic manufacturer.

I'm sure China now does actually realize that it has to have strict laws on copyright and quality control, although it may take time for it to full evntuate successfully due to the size of the country and population.

I remember in the late 80's early 90's, Thailand was a totally different place to what it is today. In those days it was a third world country and charities were a many..

Things do change...

Poisoned dumplings!

Some of you may be aware that recently, dumplings imported from China were found to have over 400%(!) of the levels the Japanese government has deemed to be safe for consumption of a certain insecticide. JT has recalled all of its frozen foods due to this.

I am starting to get concerned. This is not the first time food from Chinese factories has been an issue. I do not think that it is some kind of conspiracy, but a pattern of behaviour has been established, and I think it's quite disturbing.

Do you know anyone who has been affected by the latest food scandal involving Chinese products? Are you changing your buying habits because of it?

Sorry about that! I didn't realize you already had started this thread!

This topic was on my mind yesterday at the grocery store, and I bought the more expensive (almost twice the price!) dried shiitake mushrooms grown in Japan over the Chinese ones. Avoiding Chinese grown food will not be easy....

China says no poison found in dumplings

BEIJING - China's product safety agency cast doubt Saturday on claims that a Chinese dumpling maker sickened consumers in Japan, saying tests on its ingredients found none of the insecticide cited by Japanese authorities.
The Chinese company that made the dumplings, Tianyang Food Processing Ltd., also said Saturday that no pesticide residue was found in the factory and ruled out any chance of contamination during transportation inside China.
Chinese experts tested 30 ingredients in dumplings from the same batch as those that were exported to Japan, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said.
The uproar is especially sensitive for China, which is reeling from a series of liability incidents over food, tires and other goods. With the Beijing Olympics starting in August, the government is trying to assure foreign athletes and tourists they will be safe.
The case is unusual because Chinese food processors that export to Japan are regarded as industry leaders in quality and safety. They are inspected regularly by Japanese officials to enforce Tokyo's quality standards, which are among the world's most stringent.
I think that especially now the olympics are coming, China should/want do everything to improve things such as these.

I think the hole found in the dumpling packet is very suspicious- my moneys on the dumplings being deliberately contaminated, its true China has a really bad health and safety record, there were loads of types of products withdrawn from sale last year because of contamination, and tens of thousands of products banned simply because they were unsafe etc. But China has many enemies and i think its just as likely that someone deliberately contaminated the products with something nasty, as the scenario of a breach in health and safety regulations occurring etc.

Thus it could as well be the Japanese themselves, couldn't it?. . .

Be it to focus on other than their own contaminations at the moment, that they have tried to keep secret for too long. I would not trust their food either after all now.

Japan needs imported food, so I do not see a reason why they would do this.

If they would do this, it would be to show China that they have to take care of their food safety.

To distract from their own problem, for example. . .would also fit the picture. But I am not saying, that, I am just juggling the reasons, and they have the same weigth at present.

It may be thought.
But,
1.The poison poisoning occurred in all parts of Japan.
2.It is difficult to obtain this poison poisoning (an insecticide),
Because it is not used in Japan.

If in Japan poison was put
It is a warehouse of import.
A suspect is found immediately.

If a criminal is a Japanese case,

Oh, we had some food poisonings in Germany, of similar kinds, in german food even, widely distributed, and some sources were found, some not.
Even usual terrorists can do, any time, wherever they wish to, or just a mad individual.

We get regular quick warnings, but never panic.

I think China will do anything for money. I can't blame the workers though, as I am sure the ones at the lowest levels don't know what's going on.

Back in the early 90's I went to Walgreens and was about to purchase "cheaply" priced aspirin. The pharmacist there at that time, took me aside and told me not to purchase that aspirin as it was made in China. She said they just didn't have the standards that we did. From that day I have never purchased any medicine, toothpaste or the like that was made in China. My pharmacist was ahead or her time. I wonder what she is thinking now?

I am having a problem though, finding menma that isn't made in China. Does anyone know of a brand that isn't. All I can find are Chinese brand.

The news yesterday was that a new insecticide was found in another brand of gyoza from China.

It's said that the insecticide has been found in the gyoza "skin", inside the bag and even outside of it.

But Japan has also had its problems. Last year, confectioners admitted to mislabelling expiry dates on biscuits and rice cakes.
Sounds like some cases, that we also had in Germany.
And as for deliberately poisonings, we had several ones too, for example on baby food even, or jam and the like, from within our own country!

Anyhow, this dumpling case is in fact a severe case between China and Japan, I wish you luck over there!
