The Great Whale Trail

I thought this was an interesting thing Greenpeace is doing - tracking individual whales on their migration route in the Southern Ocean. This map shows about where they are, and you can click on each one to see information about it.

Yes, I think these are humpbacks. It would be good to see different species being tracked. I wonder if marine biologists already do that? I'll have to check.

This technology has lots of potential.

Unfortunately it seems that with present technology, tags frequently come loose and simply float through the ocean with the current transmitting false migratory information, sometimes washing ashore, or simply stopping transmissions while still in the ocean.

Hopefully the reliability of these methods can be improved.

Yes, that's right - I don't know how the tags work, but I would think they wouldn't be permanent.
