I'm wondering about the contemporary Speculative Fiction (fantasy, sci-fi; but no horror-- that's not my forte) industry in Japan. How is it like in comparison to Western Spec. Fiction (i know this question assumes western spec. fic. can be put under one roof, but... play along with me)? What are some prominent authors?
I've read Haruki Murakami's Wild Sheep Chase and Hard Boiled Wonderland, thought they were pretty good (I loved the latter; although I think the author, in some of his short stories, can be a bit too Americanophilic sometimes), but am looking for something less surreal. |
