Relatives of the abducted Japanese believe that some of them may have been executed.

"The ministry said the North Korean list indicated that two of the eight dead, Keiko Arimoto and Toru Ishioka, died on the same day, Nov. 4, 1988.

Arimoto disappeared in Europe in 1983 when she was 23, and Matsuki was also abducted while in Europe.

Arimoto's mother, Kayoko Arimoto, 76, said, 'They must have been executed publicly because of the letter. They were used as a warning to other Japanese, to show them what would happen to them if they wrote letters to Japan.'"

A few J-magazines reported that some of the abducted Japanese were obviously killed once their mission, namely to train NK agents, had been accomplished. Many of them were abducted in Europe, allegedly with assistance of Japanese Red Army members. The NK agent responsible for blowing up a Korean airliner in 1987 has been trained by Japanese abductees (see below).

Those who refused to cooperate were also executed.

The 11 people mentioned are just those whose abduction has officially been confirmed. The real number of peope who disappeared may range around 70.

In summer of 78 the number of people missing in coastal prefectures such as Toyama and Ishikawa peaked at 11. Yahoo Japan describes the case of a young couple that was about to be abducted by four men who "spoke a foreign language" and who escaped when a police patrol showed up at the beach. Police found the couple hand-cuffed and gagged. It's interesting to note that most abductees were couples.

Most likely. Best way to cover up any type of information leak. Those who are still alive are rumored to have stayed that way by not knowing anything. I wonder if they'll be reprogrammed on their release?

Hm, I'm wondering if those Japanese who are still alive will be allowed to return without further ado. One thing's for sure: selling their stories to the newspapers will help them to be retransferred into capitalism.

The figure is probably so low since most of the populace have no real clue what all this hub bub is all about. My students were outraged about the number count. So, I dropped in "Well, it's relative small compared to the thousands of Koreans!" They looked at me like ??? what the hell is this gaijin is talking about !!! Then I chirped in WWII! They were still puzeled. oh well

Students at one of the best boys schools in Sapporo.

But this doesn't really seem to be localized. I'd say there is a general amenisa that has afflicted Japan.

Time can heal it seems.

Hm, when I think of it: perhaps the educational situation in Europe isn't so much different after all. Here it's not so much amnesia, but indifference and disinterest.
