Work in japan, need to have something?

I need to have something the country wants right? like engineering or a good computer tech. manager? thoughs seem to be the popular ones.

Not necessarily. Anybody (from developed countries) can get a working visa, or a cultural, student, investor visa that permits you to work in Japan. The easiest way to get a working visa if you are a native speaker of English (possibly also French, Italian, Spanish, German, etc.) is to apply for a teaching position in a big language school, then you can find whatever job you want (if you speak Japanese, it's quite easy).

i know its kinda ignorant to want to live and work in japan with not knowing any japanese. But learning another language in an english based country is kinda hard for me.

It's surprising how easy it is to get by in Japan without speaking Japanese and it's also surprising how quickly you can learn Japanese while there.

Anyone who is a native speaker of English and has a college degree (in anything) can easily get a job teaching English in Japan. Check out Nova, Berlitz, JET, Geos, Aeon, or private schools.

Hmmm.Iｴm also having the same question in my mind. Thereｴs so much talk about teaching English, but how about other languages...like me, Iｴm a native Finnish speaker..would I have _any_ chances finding a language teaching job?

If you want a job in a different area then it would help to have experience or at least a 4 year degree in that.

if you knew the language, i could see you doing that. Construction worker is in high demand in japan. I was thinking of the same thing becuase sitting here at my desk is sooooooooo booring. I rather work with my hands.

(15-20 hours a week) at a Japanese language school for instance ?
I've heard conflicting allowances for this....some schools saying up to 4 hours is
permissible after the first semester or so, others saying it's absolutely forbidden.

Never finished my degree but moved up to the top IT spot in my company (no arm in Japan) and sure I have the experience to do IT work in Japan (subtract the ability to speak Japanese). Nothing holding me to the US atm. I could see myself taking a huge pay cut to hang out in Japan learning Japanese language and culture (my goal) and getting by teaching English on the side privately and even doing some IT work. However I do not see myself getting a working visa without the degree (something I am not really interested in finishing as they have nothing to teach me). Do you have to be A STUDENT in SCHOOL to get the cultural visa? I could go for that and 20 hours a week work. Wouldn't be able to afford all the comforts of home at that rate but I can get by. I'm more interested in learning about Japan first hand then living it up and having a nice place, TV, etc... I think it would be great to do that for a year or so, then come back to the states and pick up in the IT feild again or even stay aborad if it worked out.
(Note: I am not saying people shouldn't go to college or won稚 learn anything but I was able to move up in my field very well without a degree b/c of ability and experience.)

You need a 4 year degree to get a work visa

For an IT job japanese speaking ability is often required (along with experience in that field).

No visa, no entry into Japan, no working. Sorry.

get that degree, apply to Nova to get the visaa and give NOVA the flick the moment you land.

You'll be here with a visa and it'll be easier to find a better job actually in the country.

Good plan on how to exploit NOVA, but keep in mind you will need to secure new sponsorship for your visa and go through the standard process of transfering the names.

Japan is getting tough on visa stuff these days, and while you might have a multiple year visa, technically it becomes invalid when you leave the job that got you that visa. Still, transfering sponsorship is easier than getting an entire new visa, just make sure you stay legal.

Actually yeah I misworded. Come here with NOVA, let them do the legwork getting you a visa. As SOON as you land start looking for a new better job and as soon as you have one flip NOVA the bird.

So yeah, make sure you have a new job before you quit nova but use nova to get the visa. They only use you anyway once the work starts.
