i think it's safe to say...

those adds you've stuffed into the middle of every thread are goddamn eye-soars.. just mentioning it.. they're ugly as dog**** and they crack the threads in odd places, disrupting the flow.

I'm not fussy about ads. Heck I read http://www.fanfiction.net/ and that has pop-up ads one of which has three pop-up dialog boxes as it tries to get you to
- register as trusted
- run an exe
- change your mind when you try to exit it.
(Unsurprisingly I tracked down the domain name of that ad and added it to the 'restricted' sites list).

I do, however, agree that the ads in their present form are pretty ugly. As small a change as
a) Removing the gap before 'n' after.
and
b) Fit to width of thread
would be a big improvement.

Incidently when I viewed this thread in Mozilla Firefox the ad completely failed to display.

or just setting them after, instead of before, the last post so its not inbetween...

some threads, like this one, dont have ads. i can see others in firefox just fine, unless of course the pic didnt load then i dont even get the box with the red x.

Er it does. If you view it in Internet Explorer. And no, it still doesn't if I view it with Firefox.

There is no pic in Google ads - that's the beauty of them. (As much as any ad can be said to have beauty

I've just checked out four other threads at random and none of them had ads showing up in Firefox - although all of them (longer than one post) had a clear but small gap where the ad would have been inserted.

Hmm, using Mozilla (though not Firefox) I can see the ads, same width as the thread. Wonder, why. Maybe next time I download a new version, I should go for Firefox.

like i said before not all threads have ads.
if you want to see an ad, check this thread, above the last post.

i can see that ad, using the newest version of firefox 0.8, maybe you have a different version or havent been looking at the right threads.

although all of them (longer than one post) had a clear but small gap where the ad would have been inserted.

Firefox 0.8 : No ad. And that's no ad in the source code as well as the display. And no I don't have any anti-ad SW running.
Internet Explorer : Ad.

PaulTB, my guess is that you have javascript disabled in Firefox as the ads seem to be Javascript-based.

Good guess.
Actually I thought of that while I was falling asleep last night and I was just about to check it when I saw your post.

I've got one of those Firefox mods that allows me to put the 'Javascript [ ]' right on the toolbar - very convenient.

lol paul if you and playaa see it, ill agree that it's there, but not on my screen in either IE or firefox. so some people see them one one thread some people see them in another. which would be the cause of this confusion.

Ironically, the "ugly location" of these ads makes us aware of their existence. To be honest, if they blend perfectly into the background or look just as beautiful as just another banner, I wouldn't even notice them, not to mention give them a click.

Actually, marketing people in the world still have a hard time evaluating the effectiveness of advertisements. But for the advertisers/sponsors, it's the click that matters.

Sure I notice their existance, but the last ad I clicked was somebody looking for their stolen gnome from about a year ago.

If you don't like seeing the ads, just choose another forum style than the orange-grey default.

Ahh Haa, That Explains It, The Color Thing!!!!

Similer to the chat in the top bar menu only showing in ORANGE-GREY! I always use tatami green the minute I go to the Forum. I hadn't seen ads before this past week.
I switched to the Orange-Grey to be able to go to the chat room and all of a sudden I see all these ads! Good to know there's an easy way to avoid them!

most sites that pay for banner space now use the technology "if you don't browse the site for x minutes, your click doesn't count" and as much as i love jref, i'd rather donate some cash (when i get some) than sit and browse crap for a few minutes to give them $0.01
