Japan leading quest for first quantum computer

A quantum computer, dubbed the ultimate computer that can process information at a speed 100 million times faster than a supercomputer, is attracting global attention.
If the quantum computer is actually produced, there will be an "information communication revolution" because it can also be applied to cipher technology, industry analysts said.

quantam computers...i remember just a few years ago such things were considered a far-off idea, something that would be made one day, when the technology allowed. maybe such a computer would revlotuionize the world again, the same way the internet did, or even the originakl computer!

It also provides methodes of tamper-proof encryption
With it, you'll instantly see if the data has been tampered with, or if it has been watched by third persons which were not allowed to. They'll be in deep $hit

Yeah, not to mention that the speed increase will be exponential. This looks like exciting stuff; I can only hope to see it in my lifetime. Maybe when these things actually make it to production, everyone will be able to have supercomputers at home!

You all know what the A-bomb did huh....greater power -> greater responsibility!!!ppl might not be able to harness it's power...Imagine a full global computerblack-out....(K K....I watched too many SF-movies...but..there is truth in the stuff I say)!!

Yes, there is truth in what you say. Greedy, rich people wanting and getting power has been a part of the human experience throughout history, and I don't see that changing. What can change, though, are the toys.

As long that it didn't...

... compute that the way to save Earth is by eliminating human kind, that its decision caused one of its creator to gone on a nervous breakdown, who then later gain the capability to morph into a giant.

Want to guess which Japanese series uses that premise above?

As for quantum computer serving food and drinks.

Well... A quantum computer might be capable handling all of the computation needed to transport things, or... replicate things.

I believe quantum physics won't allow replication as a quantum value is basically two classical values in one, and as the quantum value turns into the classical value the other value is destroyed in the same dimension*. I suck at explaining things (obviously because I must not fully understand them), but I'll dig up some info on quantum theory. Or if anyone lives in the Long Beach area, I'd be happy to grab a beer and discuss it with them (It's a bit of an obsession of mine as of late).

-Jeff

*Some say the other value(s) create other dimensions.

oh my, i love this topic. anyone interested in quantum physics would be strongly urged to read anything published by michio kaku, a famous quantum scientist. ive read a few of his books and they are spectacular. he has touched on this subject many times, explaining that the very nature of reality as we know it "computes". by this he means that even on the sub-atomic scale, all molecular activity, even in-organic, happens in the same mathmatical fashion every time, and does not deviate. whao!!! what he is saying is that the universe itself is in a sense, a giant super-computer. the only problem is that quantum mechanics and Einsteins theory of relativity do not agree wholly. the difference is evident when talking about gravity. no one can "prove" that it exists. although we see its evidence all around us. the problem is that the sub-atomic particles comprising what we call "gravity", are only theory. no one has ever seen or studied one. it is believed that this particle, whitch scientists have dubbed "gravitons"
would require such a large charge of energy to study, that we would have to build a super-colider as big around as our own galaxy to provide the charge.
he claimed that "quantum computing" was an inevitability. if you would like to know more about him and his work, you can find out more, here > http://www.mkaku.org/

I dont really care about quantum computers that much, if i was a computer science major im sure i would be thrilled . Reguarding to high-technology, i just want to either pilot a giant mecha, or travel on a space elevator before I die. (im j/k, i want to do that an then some)

Once someone develops nanotechnology and is able to use it effectivley, we will see the beginning of the next industrial revolution, since nanotechnology has the ability to transform all matter..... I just hope its soon.
