Thanks for the quick replies guys!
Thanks for the advice and words of encouragement. It is so hard to gauge what the requirements are to get in so it is stressing me out a bit.
Chikiball, thanks for the heads up, I will get in touch with some potential supervisors asap!
Thepie, thanks for the link, I had a bit of a look at titech but I might give it a bit more of a look.
Are you both receiving the scholarship?
Did you originally apply for more than one university or just one, I realise you can only accept one to be sent to MEXT for consideration, but did you put the initial application in for more than one university?
    Thanks!
    A
I got accepted to the IGP-A of Titech with MEXT scholarship. However, I initially applied to Uni. of Tokyo at the same time, but later withdrew my application since the department there doesn't really match my research interest - the one I wanted to get in doesn't offer MEXT to int. applicants. Plus it's much more competitive.

Speaking of applying to multiple universities, you can do that. However, if two universities (or more) recommend you for the scholarship to MEXT, you'll be automatically disqualified. So, you can still apply to more than one, but you'll have to withdraw the application for the scholarship as soon as the time for the universities to submit their applications to MEXT comes.

It sounds a bit risky, but normally the department will make their choice very quickly, typically 1 week after the interview. You can ask your prospective advisor about your chance of getting MEXT...

Also keep in mind that people here tend to think that students stick to only one prospective advisor, so you should find a good reason to withdraw.

Like thepie said you should consider your interest before applying into university. Moreover, you could consider the number of scholarship grantees accepted by the university. (U of T is a very competitive university with a small number of scholarship grantees and Titech offers a bigger number of scholarship grantees so you could know which one is more difficult). Well,it's a little bit risky if you're in the step after the faculty's decisions about the scholarship nominees.
However, don't apply to 2 or more professors in the same faculty in one university because you would be rejected by them if they found out about it.
Well, sometimes they consider the university where you come from or the quality of the faculty where you come from. Oh yeah, if your university gives honor to high GPA students, it could improve your chance if you get the honor.
Moreover, if your professor is an important professor in the university, it could improve your chance too. CMIIW.
GPA and your background are excellent, just need some confidence and effort. Good luck.

    @AussieGuy,

I will enroll titech research student program in October. If you're interest to apply as a research student, please have a look to :
    http://www.iad.titech.ac.jp/intl_stu...ion_r2011.html

Last year, I initially applied for Hokkaido U e3 program but I canceled it. I feel like I won't be accepted because my friend dismissed the chance to get the scholarship after being recommended (in 2009). Therefore I decided to apply for titech research student program which I got positive result from the professor about my chance of getting the scholarship. The most important for choosing your designated university is you should consider your chance to be accepted as Mext scholar (ask your future supervisor). If you get positive answer, you should go for it.

Please put up your Best Effort!

    Hi,
Thanks again for all the responses guys. I am still trying to get responses from supervisors and working on the research proposal etc.

Just a couple of questions more if I may,

Is it usual for the "exam" for research students applying to articulate to the masters to just be an interview about your research proposal? I spoke to one of the advisors at Kyushu and they said at the end of the research student term you just have to present your proposal in an interview. I have heard that some of the other uni's have proper written exams... any ideas?

Also is there any way to find out how many MEXT scholarships are offered by university? I know some universities list how many they offer, but most just say "a few" so anyone know of a more concrete list of scholarships?

    Thanks so much guys!

The policy depends on the university; there is no single answer. You should consult with your prospective advisors beforehand. Mine (Titech) requires you to take the regular graduate entrance exam as do other students.

No, unless the university states so on the website. However, you can still ask your advisor and s/he at least knows how many slots were allocated for each year (and for each department, too)

    hi people!
well my news are sad, i got an e-mail few days ago saying i am not being accepted...well heh i'm ready for a next fight, not giving up...just it's gonna be very hard to wait and wait and wait again...

@architek: great news!!! you're already half a way to Japan i guess
Was this after the secondary screening or for the university confirmation. I know it was a year ago, but i've been told i passed the second screening, i just have to wait for placement confirmation from the university - is this what you missed out from last year. - I'm embassy recommendation so this may not even be applicable.

    Guys,

I am presently in Japan , I applied through University Recommendation and got MEXT scholarship in 2010 at Hokkaido University for Master's program.

I have a bad news to share.. Just heard that the MEXT scholarship has been cut down starting april 2012 from 155000 for doctor course to 145000 , 143000 for master , 142000 for research and 117000 for Undergraduate student.

The biggest blow is that from next year 70 percent of the University Recommendation seats will be cut , that means very few (1 or 2) students will be admitted from 2013.

Amidst all the tragedy and destruction Japan faced due to Earthquake and Tsunami , the japanese economy has suffered a severe blow and to recover they will cut down on Education budget..

This is the official news that was circulated to International students ....

There might be changes to this ... but the cutdown to the stipend is true...

For all those who are applying .. try your best this year only.. No one knows what rules they will change from next session..

    All the best

Hi guys, this is my first time posting here.

I had a question about the MEXT scholarship. Am I going to be disqualified automatically, for having a year back at uni? [during my undergraduate study]

Going with the reputation Japanese Universities have , most probably YES.. but thats for scholarship , if you plan to come here as self financed student , no problem if you can clear the entrance.

The scholarship form clearly states that you need to complete your bachelors from a regular 4 year course for applying to masters program. In your case it will be 5 years that is why it will be rejected. Your GPA will not be considered at all unless you clear this step.

I have seen a friend who got rejected for the same reason ,but he eventually got another scholarship from a private company ,since he was able to explain his dropout(medical reasons etc.)

    Hi guys,
I have sent my application for the 5 years PhD program in Policy Analysis at National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies. They've said the results will come out on early June and I am freaking out! I really wanna get the MEXT Scholarship, but I heard it will be harder to get it from university recommendation this year (cuz of economic situation in Japan etc). Any advice?
In addition, my overall GPA is 3.76 but I am about to graduate in my junior year (Bachelor in Economics), so I'm afraid they might say that I m not ready yet to start with the program since I've done it in 3 years instead of the regular 4 years. Do u guys think it really matters?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi.

Hi, i stumbled on this forum while searching for information. I am a Nigerian student doing a masters in turkey. i got nominated as a masters student by Meiji uni for 1 semester exchange programme under MEXT scholarship very recently and they mentioned in the email the scholarship was 158,000 for masters oct2012 - march 2013. is this true? Because according to your recent post you say the scholarship was cut. Furthermore the university informed me that since i am living in turkey as another national my trip cannot be paid for unless i fly from my home country, Nigeria. Has any other nominee on this forum experienced this and is there a way around this? I want to know if this is for sure so i can start looking for the money for the flight. Finally does anyone know how long it takes to get the student visa after application in the embassy. thank you in advance.

The scholarship has been recently cut , the amount which was conveyed to you is not true.. For masters course the amount is what I mentioned in the post presently.

As far as air ticket is concerned , Yes you need to fly from your home country if you want to have a free trip sponsored by the MEXT . This is compulsory. If you dont plan to fly from Nigeria , you will have to shell out money from your own pocket for the air fare.
My suggestion to you would be to get back to your home country atleast a week before you fly. Air fares to japan are expensive.

For the Visa , if you have all the documents from MEXT and the approval that you got the MEXT scholarship , when you apply to the embassy in your country , you will get the visa in 3 working days. Also you need to apply from your home country for the visa , so any ways you will need to get back to your country . I am not sure whether japanese embassies in other countries will give you visa since the procedure is forwarded by the Ministry from home country.

    I hope this helps ..

It really does not matter in case of PhD courses. If you clear all the entrance procedures , you will be selected . Your GPA is good .
University Recommendation are little tougher to get into than the embassy one . But if you find a good professor to take you in , and he is willing to take you as a student , than no worries .

There will be chances where the professor will initially put you as a research student for 6 months and then you will have to clear the entrance exam of the university to start your program , but its a formality .

Keep in touch with your supervisor and convince him to take you as a student. Rest will be taken care of by your professor.

You should check the Univ application requirements. They will have mentioned whether you need to contact a prospective supervisor beforehand.
