MEXT Scholarship 2015 (Research Students)

Hello ! I've also got the three letters and I am waiting for the final confirmation. Like most of you, it seems, I've applied to Waseda as my first choice.

What are the odds of getting our first choice, does anyone has any idea ?

I've applied to Keio as my second choice and at Tokyo Metropolitan University for my last choice. Since the last one is a public uni, do you think that MEXT will automatically send me there or will they consider my first choice ?

Also, does anyone know when these universities send out the unofficial confirmation that we've been accepted as a MEXT student ? I heard some people got a letter directly from the selected uni before MEXT sent them the official confirmation letter...

Lastly, does anyone know what are the odds of getting the scholarship once we have passed all the steps until now, is it most likely in the pocket or is it still very possible that we won't be seeing any sakura blossoms anytime soon ? ...

Oh well, I can't wait to know IF and where I will be going ! Hopefully it will all work out because this year is the last that I could apply to the scholarship as I will be turning 35 in 2015. Well I wish everyone else good luck ! And if anyone has applied to research sociology related topics at any of the uni I've mentioned above, please give me a shout as we might become fellow researchers ! :) Happy November ! :)

Unfortunately I have no idea what the process is when they select the university for us, im a little worried too since waseda is private. Wish I knew!
My embassy said to me that although it isnt 100%, it is unusual for mext to not follow the embassy recommendations

If u passed the interview stage, the chance are higher. And normally u would get ur first choice as I heard among my fren here, of course special cases do happen I suppose. I'm in Keio now btw.

Konhoshi and Miles5, thanks to both of you for your replies.

Konhoshi good luck to you as well for Waseda ! :) You would be studying what if you get the scholarship ? Let us know here once you get your final confirmation !

Miles5, how is Keio ? I'm a former exchange student at Waseda SILS and the rivalry between those two uni is quite something so I have no clue how is Keio, just that Waseda is better ! Lol, just kidding ! Seriously how is it ? And what are you studying or researching there ? When did you get your final confirmation (I supposed you already got the MEXT scholarship if you are studying there at the moment, maybe not ?) and what are the next steps, university wise, like they send you a bunch of documentation ? Any major things to fill out ? What about the student visa ? Etc. It's been 10 years since I studied at Waseda, my guess is that things have somehow changed since I was living there and I've only been back for a few months every year or so as a "tourist".

Oh well, this whole process is a bit stressful ! I've been told to expect the answer by late February, then it would mean a month or so to get ready to leave for Japan ! I'm pretty used to turn myself around quickly, but that one is going to be a fun challenge lol ! Still, I'm just overly excited about the prospect of maybe going back to live in Japan ! :D :D :D

Hi Nekojita33,

It's nice to know you and congratulations to your success in passing the interview stage. I am one of the nominees, like you, still waiting for the final results to be announced(crossed fingers, haha). At the same time, you can count me as your fellow university mates as i chose Waseda University as one of my university preferences. In recent times, i have an interest in checking on the club activities offered by Waseda university, and i can say, this university is really awesome. So many shared videos available on the net and it really makes me wanted to get into this university even more. The other universities are just as awesome as this one as well.. ^_^ That's what we can expect from a Japanese university.

Back to what you inquired, from what i managed to get from the past scholars(Senpais), they did mention that they received an unofficial notification from their universities and it was around the second or third week of November, depending on the university. However, not all of them get the notifications, only a part of the nominees got it. For the documents part, i think you will probably get contacted by your university once you have been placed to their university, after that they will send over the documents via post or e-mail (apartment application, details on the university and etc). I believe for visa application, we can get it done from the consulate side.

Another one more month before the short-listed names announcement and i really can't put my mind at ease at all, every single night i keep thinking on the results. Let's pray hard for the success of all of us. ^_^

Hi Nekojita, I'm studying mechanical engineering in Keio and honestly I find it not easy mayb I have been in working field for sometimes and getting back to univ takes some adjusting. I actually applied thru univ recommendation, I got final reply from mext 1.5mnth before flying off which is quite rush and the waiting wasn't easy. Continue to have faith and believe tat u will get thru.

When u got offer from univ, u could start finding accom which the univ should send u. Flight ticket would be from mext. For my case, not much doc before I reach here. But I'm not sure abt the process with embassy. U could check with them every wk. Visa was straight fwd and I got it within a day in my country.

All the best to u and Konhoshi

kokwai4869 and miles5, thank you for all the info ! it's very much appreciated ! :D
i'm crossing my fingers for all of us still waiting for our answer !

Hello everyone... I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one that is waiting for the answer... is anyone applying to Hokkaido Uni?...
Can't wait for December!:)

nekojita33, thanks for the support! I am hoping to join the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies and specialising in the Film Studies area. It looks like a really interesting programme!

I am just trying to take it day by day at the moment, and hoping something might randomly appear, haha!

Hi miles,

im not doing mechanical engineering but computer engineering, im in a similar position were i have been working in the industry for a while and havent been in uni for a while so im slightly worried (planning to do my masters). How did you find the entrance exam ?

Hi all,

I am applying for PhD in Composite Materials through Embassy Recommendation. The three schools I chose were 1st - Tokyo University of Science (Dept. Materials Science), 2nd - Tokyo Institute of Technology (Dept. Chemical Engineering), and 3rd - Saitama University (Dept. Mechanical Engineering).
These choices might seem strange, being much different from the regular 'big names' that most people apply to...but I've gotten to know professors from these schools and developed great connections with them (especially from Rikadai). In fact, I even Skype with the professor from Saidai on occasion to help each other with our languages. I have personally developed the project proposals/programs for each of these university options, so I know I'll get to conduct amazing research that matches my interests perfectly.

Like most of you, I'm anxiously awaiting the results of the Embassy Rec. applications. I've also heard that some nominees are contacted by the universities before MEXT/Embassy sends the official letter...I'm hoping I hear something soon!

Is anyone else applying to Rikadai, Tokodai, or Saidai? If so, does anyone know what the engineering entrance exams are like for PhD in those schools?

Hello everyone! I'm new here, just wondering, anyone applied to Kyushu University with MEXT scholarship for next September (2015)? I'm trying to apply for it, and pretty much nervous about it... :)

Yes, I have contacted a professor beforehand. He helped me a lot with my research project, and he even sent me bibliography to read. It is very important that you have a very good relationship with your professor, because he is the one who is going to help you enter to a postgraduate program.
Nice to meet you!

Nice to meet you too! I hope he replied to me fast, as the deadline would be on 30th November. Will see you there if I got accepted next year!

Hi everyone.I am Aziz, i have applied to Kyushu University for PhD in Argo-Environmental Sciences, can anyone tell me about the January phase in which all documents will be required and asked for the apply ?. Because i just filled the initial application and browsed some faculty members in which one replied and said that your GPA should be more than 3.7 which is already 3.97(thanks God) in my case. But i wonder what will be the selection criterion and whom will be contacted to send all documents( i mean next stage) because i remember when i was filling the form there were no GPA and other things required. Just i wrote the MS thesis abstract and something about my plan for PhD. The preliminary screening follow what criterion ?,,,,please comment if anyone have information....Wish you best of luck......Cheers

Hi Aziz, I have no idea with minimum GPA and all, as for my MSc I studied in UK, which doesn't have GPA systems. Btw, are you from Indonesia?

Thank you man Black Obama
I am from Pakistan, I did Bachelors from Pakistan and doing Masters in Indonesia. Actually every university in Japan is having its own schedule when it comes to University recommended Mext and thats why i applied for Kyushu because my Master will finish in January 2015; and then i will be in position to provide them with my full documents if they select me to the next phase which is January/February 2015. I following this thread and no one is talking about university recommended Mext. In Kyushu i have found that the MEXT process given is very systematic and clearly stated. But i am just confused by the email of the professor who told me about GPA and there is in fact no GPA option given in the initial application. That's why i put this question that how are they gonna select the students ? on what grounds ? or may be they see if they have supervisor approval or not etc ?. Anyhow thank you for reading my query and hope so someone will understand my question and will help me out.
Thank you once again Black Obama,,,
