Mikoshi _`

Mikoshi These are portable shrines used in matsuri. They are carried in the streets by dozens of people. The largest of them can weigh several tonnes and require hundreds of people to carry them.

Mikoshi can be very expensive, as they are often gold-plated and sometimes encrusted with diamonds, rubies and saphires, like Tomioka Hachimangu's Ichi-no-Miya Mikoshi in Tokyo.
