MEXT Scholarship (Graduate Students) 2017

Good evening guys!

I have been quite busy with my work and couldn't check this thread.

I have sent by DHL today my application documents for the LOA at the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies (GSII) of the University of Tokyo.

(Anyone who's also gunning for GSII's ITASIA Program?)

The last day of application for LOAs in GSII is on the 31st of August. We were instructed by the Japan Embassy Manila to submit our LOAs by 24th of September.

Did Kobe University require a hard copy of the application documents to be mailed? Or are they happy with just scanned copies?

Is it the same with Kyoto University?

Thanks
Hi, I have applied to a different grad school at todai :D Graduate school of science. Will let you know If I get any updates :)

And judging from madphysicist's posts I think kyoto is fine with scanned copies. Might depend on faculty though. Try emailing and asking them :D

I have obtained only one LoA and even though I sent the documents at the beginning of the month, I am still waiting for the other universities' answers. I am a bit worried that they won't let me know within the deadline (31 of this month), in which case I won't be able to send the documents to other universities if they reject me...
I'm puzzled about what is the best thing to do, I was thinking about two things:
- Contacting the universities and asking if it's possible to have at least an unofficial answer before the 31, even if the LoA is not ready yet... however, in this case I'd have to explain the situation, especially the fact that I need an answer because in case of rejection I'll be able to send the documents elsewhere (it might sound rude?)
- Sending directly the documents to another university before waiting for the answers, but are we allowed to do so?

Any suggestions guys?

I think it is best to cobtanct as many universities as possible. My contanct at the embassy told me that if possible I shoild get as many LOAs as possible even more tgan the required 3. So far I have received 4 LOAs wc hv been sent by EMS.
So my advice to u is to apply for the LOAs from many unis as possible iregardless of whether u hav already applied to other unis. It will not be too late to make your university choice after receiving the LOAs.

You can even apply for the LOA even without an advisor although the process may take a bit long however it is worth a shot. Some universities like Kyushu Uni take less than Seven days to process yr LoA.

Hop this helps

Since I have found multiple people saying "I hear that Keio will only admit you if it is the ONLY university you state in your list", but nothing that really confirms/rejects this statement, I'm writing for anyone that perhaps is still wondering or considering taking this risk.

I applied to Keio, and have sent them my list of 3 unis (in which Keio was first, but was not the only one). I got accepted, so I believe if you have a professor that's willing to take you in and a good proposal (or perhaps they even check your background/grades/etc), you will get your LOA from them. Of course, then it is all up to the MEXT committee, but at least getting the LOA from Keio is not impossible!

Today I have a scheduled interview with my third option university, I was thinking, what if they ask me why they are my third option? I wouldn't really know what to answer, have you gals and guys been asked this in interviews, if not, what would you say?

Thanks for your help

well, I passed the interview and got my first LOA from doshisha, now to get one from Keio and Waseda.

Congratulations!
Doshisha is one of the four universities I got LoA from. I am waiting for my next LoA from Rikkyo and Tohoku.
However, another student selected from my country couldn't obtain any LoAs. Yesterday I received a phone call from my Embassy. They asked if I could help the student get at least one LoA. They said we were the only two applicants passed 1st Screening.
The schools I contacted said that it was too late, because the deadline was August 31st.
Have you guys got any idea about this problem? Do you think she still has opportunity to get an LoA?
Thank you!

Try talking with the universities as soon as possible, I doubt they will over look the deadline for her, but its worth a try.

I meant other universities. But if some universities are already saying no then its probably going to be a no from other universities too.

I feel bad for her :( I hope something works out.

Also, try contacting tranzsenz (sorry if i get the name wrong!) see the first page of this thread, you will find his blog and post there. He used to work in a university, he might give you some advice, but I'm afraid it will be a negative response.. (pessimist)

Thank you so much for your helpful quote!
I sent her some grad schools' email addresses. I hope everything will be positive.

Even if without any LOA she can still pass the second screening. My advise is for her to do a proper research of the prospective professors who fit her research plan. My advice will be for her to chose national universitues or at most public universities that are not very prestigious (i.e top 12) but can still offer her a place.

Last year if you check the thread yiu will find that there is a person who got the scholarship without any LOA.

Seems like a very good idea. So this means she can still hope to pass the second screening even without any LoA.
Thank you for your advice my friend.

Very excited for everyone able to get their LOA's! I think I am getting one from Keio - very positive talk with my prospective advisor, and things are looking good for Kyudai as well. Only hiccup in the process for me so far has been that my embassy wants the LOA's sent directly to them... so my other choices (Waseda and Todai) have told me they can't give me personally any notice on whether I am accepted or not. Fingers crossed!

A long shot, but an other applicants from Australia have any tips on how to deal with this send-directly-to-the-embassy stress?

I obtained my second LoA (already arrived at home!) and I should get my third one on the 7th of September, I am relieved that everything is finally turning out well.

I just have a doubt about one LoA and I'd like to ask if it's normal: in the first blank of the "details" section (the "Course of Acceptance" blank), they wrote "Undegraduate Course - School of Letters", but shouldn't be there a Master's course name? In fact, in the other LoA has been written down the name of a Graduate School instead...
I started to wonder if it was ok because I am now filling the Placement Form and for each university I'm required to put the name of the graduate school, not undergraduate. Even if the LoA is ok as it is, what should I do with the Placement Form? I put the name of the undergraduate department or the graduate one?
(The university department is this, anyway: ホーム — 大阪大学大学院文学研究科・文学部

Me thinks there is problem with your LOA since it may cause problems when Mext tries to contanct your university. My advise is for you to recontact the admission office and try to have them corrent the LOA and put the name Graduate school.

oh no, for real??
The university already sent me the hard copy which is supposed to arrive shortly :(
What is worse, even if I contact the office now they won't answer before Monday and my embassy deadline is on 12th.
I think I'm going to contact the embassy to ask for their advice...

thank you lesychawz, I hope they will accept it because I don't think there is enougb time left and Osaka would be my first choice probably... hope to get good news within tomorrow.

Guys, I have a question unrelated to the application process, regarding dormitory and accommodation: I noticed that for Mext students, the university set a maximum period for your stay in the dormitories, which is one year or even 6 months. Now, since I don't seem to find this info in every universities homepage (some provides only little information about dormitories), I was wondering: is it the same in every university, or you can find places where you can stay in dormitories for the whole period of your scholarship?
What about your universities on this matter?

In my understanding each university has different accommodation. For example, Doshisha university has on-campus dorms, however Hosei university has dorms that are away from campus.
I think it is the best if the university provides with the dorm. It seems to be very expensive to rent a house by yourself.

yeah agree, it would be veeery much better if the university provides dorms accommadions, however in some cases such as Osaka university it seems that you can stay in the dorms only for about 6 months if you are a mext student and I think it is the same elsewhere too, for example at TUFS in Tokyo, because when I studied there, many mext students left the dorms after 6 month if I remember correctly. I'm not sure about the exact reason, actually, but now that I saw that is the same at Osaka University I thought that it might be a general rule for mext students perhaps?
At Doushisha mext students are allowed to stay for the whole period students are in Japan?
I'd like to know how it works at Tokyo Gakugei as well since I might also end up there. Maybe I'll try to ask the office in charge by e-mail.

I was wondering, if you send your three LoAs, do they pick the one with the cheapest tuition fees? the difference between doshisha and Waseda is really big and I really would like to go to waseda, has anyone have checked this based on previous years?

Hey guys, sharing this information from the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies (GSID), University of Tokyo.

I received an email this morning informing me that they don't have the exact date as to when the result of the application for Letters of Acceptance will be released. But definitely they'd release the result after the 23rd of September. Ugh

The deadline for Philippine candidates to submit their LOAs is on the 24th of September. Talk about girigiri moment. Haha

I was only able to submit LOA applications to Toudai and Meidai but no LOAs yet as of today. I hope the universe connives.

That's all! Congratulations to those who have more than 3 LOAs already!
