MEXT Scholarship (Graduate Students) 2017

So I got a very quick and excited e-mail from the Embassy saying it's confirmed that I'm going to Keio! Still nothing properly "official" but it's good to know that the Embassy and the people at Keio are on the same page haha. I'm so glad I got the confirmation from my prof before, I don't think I could have bared the wait.

Do people use Line? That might be more handy if there's a large number of us who don't have Facebook.

I just got confirmed too! Off to Hiroshima University. So excited. It's a busy time for Aus so I'm glad that they sent the emails out finally.

Line would be a good idea! Once everyone is in Japan they'll be using it so much anyway.

Exactly, once I'm in Japan I will use Line with my new sim card.

Had no idea what "LINE" was until now... seems like WhatsApp, is that right? Also, Nagoya University has just contacted me for dormitory application procedures =D. Despite not having an official confirmation from the consulate, I fell much better now.

Identically to my case. Congratulations! :)

P.S: I do have facebook, but it is okay for me to be part of whatever group you guys suggest.

You had a 3 year's bachelor's degree too right? I assume you were in a Master's course in your university this year? Is it okay for you to withdraw from your current university?
I mean were your marks from your current course taken into consideration when you applied or something?
I will complete my Master's this year as well, I assumed they require my Master's degree too. (I'm just curious about this.)

I actually started this Masters as a backup plan in case the scholarship didn't work out this time again. I just started the first semester this last August and is completely unrelated to what I plan to study in Japan.
Since I have a Teaching Assistant possition, it would not have been correct to let the semester start and then notify them of my leave. So I already withdrew even though we still have a couple months to go :)

Hi! Am new here...came across this forum as I was already at the last leg waiting for the final results. Just got my results today, am going to Hitotsubashi Univ! Although, didn't get my first choice school (maybe it was because my 1st choice was a private univ), still happy that it's a go! =). Noticed that most are studying hard sciences, haven't seen others pursuing a social sciences major yet. Hope the others get their results soon too!

Just received the email myself! Congrats, Trish! Seems like the PH Embassy have their hands full this afternoon.

I will be going to Kyoto University, my 1st choice and only LOA submitted, and will later pursue PhD in Biological Sciences. I can now inform my sensei so he can start with my dorm applications.

Question: My friend is placed in Tokyo U, his first choice (second is Kyodai). He indicated April 2017 in his application form. Would he be given a chance to defer the scholarship to October 2017? Have you heard of any similar case before? He may only be able to defend his MS Thesis by May, and cannot make it to Japan this April.

The waiting was really tough, but congrats everyone! And thank you!!!

I'm going for social sciences! What area are you studying?

I actually did a little bit of look in to this as I applied for a job/graduate position as back-up (18 month program). From what I saw, there was no way to defer as they've given you your place for that round of applications. I don't know if it would be different if you're only looking to defer to the second semester of the same year. I think this is a question for your Embassy!

Congrats too! Since I got into my 2nd choice univ, the professor was assigned to me and I haven't been personally in touch with him yet unlike in my 1st choice. The university has not contacted me regarding accommodations yet so am hoping to ask the embassy if I can already make contact with the university so that I can have my preferred room type...lol!

Wow, everyone is getting their results. Congrats to everyone!

Question: did you have a plan B prepared? I mean, I am afraid of getting a negative answer next year and having no plan. I am thinking about applying to other PhDs just in case

yeah me !!!
But have you heard anything for your professor or university about the selection because i havent. :(
Yeah...got final results from embassy, from my supervisor and also from student affairs office about applying for accomodation.
You could send an email to the student affaires office because i did that before getting notified by the embassy about my final results

I had multiple plans haha. My supervisor for my Master's thesis offered to take me on as a PhD student if I didn't make the MEXT program. I also looked into TAing at my university and I made inquiries about moving to Japan to pursue a job in my career field (English language education) rather than continuing with academia. I think it helped keep my stress levels lower throughout the application process that my eggs weren't all in one basket.

Thanks for the info mate.
Could you specify the email where you sent your query and they told you about the results?

I had a plan B. I started a masters degree in the US in August while waiting for the results. That means I have finished the first semester.
Having a plan B made the world of difference to me in this year's application. I woould recommend you have one.

Hello everyone!

Finally I got the confirmation from the Japanese embassy that I am placed at the University of Tokyo.

I will start out as a research student first but I hope to get in to the ITASIA PhD Program of the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies. The program is multidisciplinary and my research is on media studies and asian societies.

I have a question (regarding the intensive nihongo lessons) to those who are also going to Toudai and will start out as research students as well (and to those who are already in Toudai who might be reading this) if you've gotten info already.

My graduate school is located in Hongo but the dorm assigned to me is near Komaba campus. Will we take our nihongo lessons in Komaba campus or will it be in the main campus? I have yet to receive information regarding nihongo lessons.

Thanks.

Congrats for Toudai! I am also curious about the Japanese lessons, they will be extremely necessary. May I ask what is the subject of your research, more specifically? I find the topic you mentioned to be interesting.

Will be studying Social Psychology...as with most, starting of as a research student then I'll eventually pursuing a PhD... how about you?

I'll be studying in the Graduate School of Media and Governance, with my research being kind of sociology-focused. Not sure what to call it but it's definitely in that vein of the social sciences c:

I had a few, and they definitely took off the pressure. I signed up for a local Masters, so I had an academic back-up. I also applied for a government graduate program which was a job + a graduate diploma in Government (which is basically what I'm aiming for, a postgrad degree aimed at Gov. work), and if that wasn't successful I was going to apply for JET. But I got accepted in to the graduate program and MEXT, so I never actually started that one haha.

It was good though because my family are the kind to harp on you about every negative consequence, so having something to say "if this doesn't work, then I have THIS" was great to explain things to them and also help me manage the stress/waiting.

Regarding a plan B, I was just going to try again if I failed ( as much as neccesary), and meanwhile keep working and learning from my job.

Consistency is always a good idea :)
If I may ask, have you heard from the Waseda's International office regarding the orientation dates and housing options?
As for my case, Embassy of Japan in Turkmenistan already issued a student visa for me. They said that the ticket to Japan will be sent by MEXT around March 18.
Can't wait until then )))

Hello Dauntless, I sent them an email asking about that and the answer was that they will inform us of orientation dates and housing options around early February.

In my case the embassy hasn't still given us the student Visas, I hope they contact us soon.
