Trekking in the Japanese Alps near Matsumoto
Matsumoto is an ideal base to explore some of Japan's most scenic mountains, such as Mount Yariga-take, Mount Hodaka-dake, Mount Norikura-dake or Mount Jonen-dake.
The small towns of Hotaka (穂高) and especially Kamikochi (上高地) are even closer to these mountains.
Trekking in the Omote Ginza
A popular 3-day route, called the Omoto Ginza (表銀座), goes as follow :
Hotaka(穂高) => 5h walk => Tsubakuro-dake (燕岳) => 3h30 walk => Daitenso (大天荘) => 6h30 walk => Yarigatake (槍ヶ岳) => 5h30 walk => Kamikouchi (上高地) => 1h30 by bus => Shin-Shimashima (新島々) station.
How to get there
There are buses to Hotaka from Matsumoto or direct buses from Shinjuku station. Buses join Kamikouchi to Shin-Shimashima station, from where trains connect to Matsumoto.
