Item details

600 Basic Japanese Verbs is a book intended as a study guide for those who would take AP and Japanese Language Proficiency exams as a reference guide for studying. But more than just for taking the exams, anyone learning Japanese from the beginners up to those in the advanced level would find it useful as it does include Romaji and Hiragana characters for those who are just learning the language and also the Kanji form for those in the advanced stages.

The book is compiled by the Hiroo Japanese Center, composed of teachers of the Japanese language. Hiroo Japanese Language Center is an accredited institution of the Japanese Ministry of Education. They are involved in training Japanese teachers, thus have a reputable name in teaching the language.

The book basically is divided into four parts. The first part gives introduction to the Japanese Verbs. It clearly and concisely explains the nature of the Japanese Verbs. The book correlates the use of verbs in Roman letters for easier understanding and application for the learners of the language especially the beginners. The book clearly explains the different forms of the Japanese verbs and when to use each form. The introductory part also shows how to make the polite and humble form of the verb as well as the transitive and intransitive form of the verb which is very essential in learning the Japanese language.

The second part is the list of Japanese verbs. It shows the Hiragana reading and then the different Kanji reading of the same verb and the different meaning of each Kanji form of the verb. It also demonstrated the 24 forms on which the verb can be transformed from the plain form to the humble affirmative form of the verb. Some of the forms of the verbs are used in different examples and translated in English, Romaji, and in Japanese characters.

The third part is a list of different compound verbs, the meanings and how each verb is being used while the fourth part deals with the –suru form of verbs.

The main objective of the book is to serve as a reference for those learning the language to understand and comprehend the use of verbs. It lists the different verbs uses it in a sentence for application and hopefully the reader would pick up and how to use it.

While the reviewer haven't found any other books comparable to this one, he found the Japanese-English dictionary as the books possible works regarding the subject but as the book does not contain the meaning of other words other than verbs, the advantage of this book is to help the learners of the language understand the transformation of the verb and how to functionally use it.

The book is a good reference guide for those learning the language from the beginners to the advanced learners of the language. It is a must not only for those taking proficiency exams but for all those learning the language. The strength of the book is in the uniqueness of the subject and the way it is written and in including the Kanji form not only of the verb but it clearly shows how Japanese would write such sentence. Thus, this book could also serve as a practice material for those learning the language. The problem the reviewer finds is the vagueness on which how each form should be used. The examples given are just limited. If a reader is given twenty six forms of the verbs, then there should also be shown how each of this form is used especially if the author would want the book to reach those in the introductory phase of learning the language.
