After Osaka I visited Hiroshima. I planned to go to Nagasaki to meet a friend after Osaka so dropping into Hiroshima for a few days on my way there worked out just fine. The first place I visited when I went to Hiroshima was the peace park and atomic bomb museum. It was around half a mile from my hotel so it was very easy to get to both of them. It was the first time that I had seen the affects of a nuclear bomb first hand. Of course in school in America we go over the events of World War II and the dropping of the Atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but both places feel far away and not quite real at least to me at the time. There are of course a lot of locals there meeting with tourist trying to give information about the bomb and to advocate for there to never be a tragedy like it again. Some also try to advocate for a world with no more wars, while I agree with the sentiment I don't agree that it's likely or possible with the current state of affairs. The next day I went to see Utsukushima I had heard about the red gate and seen it in various media before. With the street cars in Hiroshima it was pretty easy to get to the island. I enjoyed the contrast from the previous day to go from seeing something so devastating to seeing something so serene and calm. It's nice to know that even after the horrors of 70 years ago that life still goes on and that we as humans mostly strive to make tomorrow a better day. My time in Hiroshima was very limited but I feel it left a lasting impression on me that I won't forget any time soon.
