    Can you say "My mother doesn't like coffee a lot" instead of "My mother doesn't like coffee very much"?

    Would "Sun sets in the west" be used more often than "the sun sets in the west"?

    (a) "My mother doesn't like coffee a lot"

    (b) "My mother doesn't like coffee very much"

    (c) "Sun sets in the west"

    (d) “The sun sets in the west."

    ~~~~~
    (a) sounds strange. We usually use these three sentences. The three mean the same thing:
    My mother doesn't like coffee very much.
    My mother doesn't like coffee that much.
    My mother doesn't like coffee so much.
    If you want to say something like, “Okaasan wa hontoni ko-hi- suki janai desu.” or “Okaasan wa mono sugoku ko-hi- suki janai desu.” you can say, “My mother really doesn’t like coffee.” or “My mother doesn’t like coffee at all.”
    (c) is wrong. You must say (d).
