Can someone please let me know what time of day the semi begin to chirp? I lived in Japan many years ago and I can't remember when they started every summer morning (or maybe I've blotted out the memory). Also, what time of day do the train announcements begin? I'm assuming they keep the volume down until a decent hour. Thanks.

Most cicadas begin to chirp when it becomes hot, whether it's morning or midday. Higurashi "Tanna japonensis" is a bit different. It begins to chirp in evening in late summer. Most Japanese people feel melancholy by the sound, as in the wikipedia I embedded above.

The volume is the same whole day in my region, but it could be different depending on the area or even station.

This year we heard the first semi at the end of June, due to the unusually early end of the rainy season.
