Takeda Kōunsai

Takeda Kōunsai (武田耕雲斎, 1803-1865) was a councillor to Tokugawa Nariaki and a leader of the Mito Rebellion. A supporter of the pro-imperial fraction, he first tried to calm the insurgents, but later agreed to lead them on a march to Kyōto to request the shogun to follow the principles of Sonno jōi. After the unrest was quelled by the Tokugawa shogunate, he and other insurgents were beheaded.
