    Apartment building foreclosure

Last month I got a letter from Osaka court (almost gave me a heart attack) saying that the owner of the apartment building I live in owes money to a bank and asking me for some general information. This month I got a letter saying a guy from court will come to check the building and all...

    Telling foreigners about ご祝儀

Hi everybody, My fiancee (Japanese) and I are getting married soon and we'd like to invite people from work. Japanese people already know about ご祝儀 but foreign people might not. When I suggested just telling them directly about it she said it sounded too rude. I was wondering if anybody has...

    N4 text question

Part of a text in my N4 practice book says the following: もみじ山は、春、夏、秋、冬、きせつによって、いろいろな花が______ ゆうめいです。 The book says the correct answer is さくことで but I chose さいているところで. It goes on to explain that for the latter to be correct it would have to be ところとしてゆうめい so that 'it can go with the subject...

As a potential foreign tourist in Japan

Honestly, I think that Japan isn't that much different from any other country in terms of what's perceived as rude. Playing music out loud or talking really loud on the train, jumping a queue, littering... There are of course some things specific to the country and its culture, but I think most...

    Buying good 甘酒

Hi. I was wondering if anybody would know where in Osaka or Kyoto I can buy good amazake. The one I buy in my usual supermarket is OK but I have a real craving for the 'unfiltered' kind in which you can actually find bits of rice (I only had it once in one of the tea-shops at Kiyomizudera and...

    Conditionals

I've been studying the conditionals and I'm struggling a bit with れば and たら. I understand the grammar points but I don't quite get in what specific circumstances is each used (I do with と and なら), specially because a lot of times they are interchangeable. I was hoping somebody could maybe...

My municipality is demanding payment on national health insurance.

There's a document you can fill in and ask for a deduction, which is what I did, and got a 50% one, no crying involved. I still have to pay about 100.000 yen, but it won't hurt my finances as much.

My municipality is demanding payment on national health insurance.

Nope, it's the one who told me the story herself and gave me the idea of going to the 市役所 myself to try and get a deduction when I received a 2.200 dollar bill for last year's pension (I started paying it this year) :)

My municipality is demanding payment on national health insurance.

I recently heard about a Japanese girl who went to live to Australia for a year, came back to Japan to find she had a bunch of unpayed health insurance bills, cried a little bit at the 市役所 and got them pardoned. So just of curiosity (I'm very happy to pay all my health insurance and pension...

I was reading a text about 抹茶カレー and came upon this sentence: 価格は540円で、新感覚の和風カレーとして人気商品になっています I get the general meaning of it, but I don't get the usage of として.

My phone is an HTC htl23 butterfly (HTC J butterfly HTL23 スペックとレビュー | HTC 日本 and the name of the app is 'TV'. I've got a 32gb card in + 32gb main phone memory, so I don't think space is the issue (90% of it is free) The phone is second hand and it used to be an AU phone (it has all the AU apps...

    one-seg questions

I recently changed to UQ Mobile and discovered that the second hand phone I bought allows to watch TV on it via oneseg (ワンセグ) and I've been able to watch programes on my phone without any problems. I've also seen there's an option on the app to record programs, but every time I try to use it I...

Question on Japan National Health Insurance

Thanks for the link. I checked it and it more or less adds up. I didn't suspect they were cheating me, but some friends of mine got a bill for 50.000 a month on their first year here due to a clerical error and I just wanted to make sure that my bill was within reasonable parameters.

Question on Japan National Health Insurance

I'll post on this thread to avoid opening a new one with the same title. I arrived in Osaka (Yao-shi to be precise) to work in January last year and I payed about 3000 yen a month on health insurance. I was told that the first year premiums were very cheap and that they would raise on my...

    Repairing headphones

Thanks, I'll try those places. I've never soldered anything myself, so I'm a bit worried I'll make a mess of things. I'd rather have somebody who knows about these things have a look at it.

    Repairing headphones

I've recently had cable-related problems with my headphones (they stop working properly if you move the cable a certain way) They were a bit pricey so I'd like to have them repaired rather than throw them away. Does anybody know of a place that repairs headphones in Osaka? (preferibly not too...
