Looking for insight for working on a US base

Are you looking for a GS or contractor position? Or would something like Burger King be okay? If you want the full suite of base privileges, you'd probably need a GS or contractor position.

Economy Japan to tap into digital nomads

Do you know if there are any obstacles to using digital nomad income as support for a marriage visa? By the way, how is digital nomad being defined? Are they independent contractors? If somebody has been an employee of a company for many years, transitions from an office position to an online...

Society 30% of Japan's unmarried adults under 50 never dated

Why do you think are the reasons for so many Japanese people choosing the single life? My hunches are based on what I experienced in Japan 20 years ago, so I'd appreciate hearing some up-to-date perspectives.

    News Olympus selling camera division

As fond as I am of component hi-fi systems, it's a tough value proposition these days when most people are fine using their PC as their home system and their phone as their portable player. It truly is the end of an era when the Japanese camera companies start exiting.

Comment by 'Vincent3' in article 'Gender Differences in Spoken Japanese'

Great article! It's good to be aware of the gendered speaking styles as you're growing your Japanese.

The article is about safety in terms of COVID-19.

How often do you go out when you're in Japan?

I had to see my doctor a couple of weeks ago, and they seemed to do a good job of managing safety. If they thought the check was important enough for me to go in, I'd probably be comfortable following their guidance. It depends on the situation, and I'd ask questions about the necessity and...

How often do you go out when you're in Japan?

I'm not in Japan, but I go out only for essentials when the store would be least crowded. Although Japan is probably safer than where I'm from, I'd do the same there.

Any of you English teachers still working?

I'd hope that schools with lesson booths are making other arrangements. At the eikaiwa where I worked in the late 90s, the room was barely big enough for three students and the teacher to be crammed around the small table - and the staff would sometimes show up with a folding chair and a fourth...

Can't cash or deposit check from US gov't

I searched online banking and found this: https://www.bankrate.com/banking/best-online-banks/ I don't know if you need to appear in person to open an account, or whether you can send proof of identity electronically or through the mail.

    Why Japanese women are thin?

Japanese men too tend to be thin. It's most probably their dietary habits.

    COVID-19 Coronavirus: situation in Japan

My Japanese wife suspects that Japan isn't being completely forthcoming, and that 5th safest might not be accurate. Be that as it may, I'd think it's still toward the top of the list.

Japanese martial arts goods (Yumi, etc.)

The Tozando page gives you a good idea of the price ranges. A set of beginner-level kyudo equipment would cost several hundred US dollars. Where are you learning kyudo? When I learned at a city sports center, they had bows and arrows that beginners could use. I bought equipment in phases.

Japanese martial arts goods (Yumi, etc.)

I've seen several online stores, but can't make a recommendation since I haven't ordered any budo supplies online. When I shopped at physical martial arts shops in Tokyo, some sold supplies for a broad range of arts and some specialized in kendo and iaido. I learned kyudo for a year, and the...

    ECC Corporate

Late reply, but I'm surprised and saddened to hear that about Berlitz. If any of the eikaiwa are still reasonable places to work, which offer the best employment experience for the teachers?

What do you like about living in Japan?

I left Japan 15 years ago, after living there for six years (plus three years on military assignment in Tokyo). It was the right decision at the time, but I miss Japan intensely. I like around 60% of the list, with a particular nod to the thriving consumer culture. Unlike here in the US, which...

    Extremely Passive Aggressive Japanese Coworker

One way to get there is to approach interactions with her compassionately. Maybe she's had some misfortune in her life and is somehow connecting it with you. That interpretation sounds like a stretch in this situation, but approaching it that way might help you stay in the right frame of mind...

    Extremely Passive Aggressive Japanese Coworker

That was my point. I wouldn't disclose the log itself, but have it as my personal reference. The unfortunate reality is that keeping a log of an employee's behavior is fine for management, but presumptuous for the rank-and-file. I should have made that clear. Thanks for the catch.
