I am having a lot of trouble understanding passive and causative forms, and next week it will get worse because I will have to learn passive causative. My question is, for the examples below, does it change the verb from intransitive to transitive when used with inanimate objects? 私はハンカチをしめらせた。...

    transitive and intranstive

Thanks for the correction. I am not familiar with those two verbs as i just learned them, so i got them mixed up. Also is there an easier way to distinguish is a verb is transitive or intransitive without dictionary look ups?

Learning Japanese , probably a dumb question.

Nope we dont use textbooks. I believe all the material has been created by the Japanese Studies department. We don't study from textbooks. We get lecture notes for the semester to print out, so as to make it more convenient when studying or attending lectures. It is structured as: -Grammar point...

Learning Japanese , probably a dumb question.

Japanese is very easy in the beginning. The basic grammar structures are easy to grasp, but when you reach an intermediate level it all goes to hell from there. I learnt hiragana and katakana in around 3 hours all up. I also would recommend learning the phonetic alphabet and then start grammar...

    why だれかに and not だれにか?

So someone in my class asked our lecturer why it was darekani and not dareniki like darenimo. I was wondering the same thing, is it because there is a set order for particles or something else? Here is the text so you know what i am talking about: A:「昨日のコンサートで、友達のだれかに会いましたか。」...

My main concern would be speaking. My listening is ok i guess, but my speaking skills are just down right awful. It is near impossible for me t put a sentence together without thinking over it in my head for at least 1 minute or 2, for beginner material i can think of the sentences quicker...

broken a leg VS broken my leg

First one states you have broken your own leg. The second one not so much. It doesn't specify whether you broke your own leg or someone else's leg, it just states that you have broken a leg.
